With this prime position as you can imagine The Spaniards has several tales to tell.

Why the Spaniards?

This inn, bursting with character, was named after the Spanish Ambassador to James I of England. It is rumoured that highwayman Dick Turpin was born there, during the time that his father was landlord in the early 1700s.

Dickens immortalised the taverna in The Pickwick Papers. It was allegedly here that Keats penned ‘Ode to a Nightingale’.

Hence, the Spaniards has always had a romantic, rather nostalgic air accompanied by a magical feeling of being suspended in time.

The inviting hearth at the Spaniards Inn. It overlooks the river Thames, but is located in a peaceful neighbourhood just down river of Canary Wharf.

The bar at the Grapes. Photo credit, www.thegrapes.co.uk

The Grapes, originally known as ‘The bunch of Grapes’ has stood proud for 500 years. Limehouse was considered one of the healthy areas of dry land during Elizabeth I’s reign.

Sir Walter Raleigh set sail on his third voyage to discover the New World from just below the Grapes.

Charles Dickens was a patron, this is not unusual however for London pubs of this generation as the man liked a drink. That said he actually made reference to the Grapes in his novel ‘Our Mutual Friend’.

No shortage of writers who took a shine to our local Limehouse: Oscar Wilde in “Dorian Gray” and Arthur Conan Doyle, had Sherlock Holmes off searching for opium in the neighbourhood.

Prolific painters were also on site, Francis Bacon lived and worked at no 80, whilst Edward Wolfe was at no 96.

On The Grapes’ walls hang works from Napier Hemy, Louise Hardy, plus a painting entitled “Dickens at The Grapes” by the New Zealand artist Nick Cuthell.

The Grapes survived the Blitz bombing and is still standing strong today to tell the tale of its captivating history.

Many things have been updated, not least the menus, but tradition is respected to the Nth degree. Nice London pub grub is served downstairs and smarter dining available upstairs on crisp linen tablecloths for a romantic evening meal.

The pub’s other unique feature is a famous leaseholder, Sir Ian McKellen, who occasionally hosts the terribly popular Monday evening quiz night.

The White Hart on Drury Lane

The White Hart pub has stood on the corner of Drury Lane and High Holborn for centuries.

The White Hart on Drury Lane. It was a legendary watering hole for London’s notorious highwaymen and rogues.

In the 16th and 17th centuries, Drury lane was actually a rather fashionable street, inhabited by society types including the likes of The Marquess of Argyll, Oliver Cromwell and Nell Gwynne.

However, things took a turn in the 18th Century, Drury Lane became a bad neighbourhood, one of the worst slums in London, notorious for its brawls, drunkenness, prostitutes, and gin palaces.

Urban legend claims that thieves drank at The White Hart. Turpin coming in for a final pint prior to his hanging in 1739.

Nowadays things have changed, the White Hart is a Morton Scott family pub in the heart of London. It’s a great place to go after walking round Covent Garden and embankment, visiting theatreland or any other central London attractions.

And what’s best you’ll be drinking in a little London history from your bar stool.

Planning a trip to Â鶹APP ?
