Countless artists attended the school, and if I could guess, that includes a few of your favorites! Are Eug\u00e8ne Delacroix, or Edgar Degas ringing any bells?! The building itself is also really beautiful, and is in one of my favorite areas of Â鶹APP, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/best-things-to-do-in-paris-sixth-district\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">6th arrondissements<\/a>. It\u2019s not too far from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/history-of-the-louvre-palace-before-the-art\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Louvre<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/10-amazing-artworks-you-need-to-see-at-the-musee-dorsay\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mus\u00e9e d\u2019Orsay<\/a>, respectively.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Do you want to learn more about the <i>l&#8217;\u00c9cole des beaux arts<\/i>? In it\u2019s earliest days, it was known as the Academy of Fine Arts (<em>Acad\u00e9mie des Beaux-Arts<\/em><\/span><span class=\"s3\">), and was opened thanks to a man named <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Cardinal Mazarin. The Cardinal hailed from Italy, and was a celebrated politician and diplomat. He also served as the minister to the young <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/10-famous-french-kings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">king<\/a> Louis XIV, who was just 5 years old at the time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Like with most things, France was determined to have the best of the best, and this including art institutions. Italy was known world wide for it\u2019s celebrated artists and masters, and already boasted many fine art schools in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/tour\/city\/rome-walking-tours\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rome<\/a> and Florence. Refusing to be outdone by their Italian peers, the Academy of Fine Arts was opened.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">The school was very particular about who they accepted, but once you were in, you could expect to take classes on drawing, painting, sculpture, engraving, and architecture, in addition to some other mediums. As Louis XIV grew, he eventually began to choose the most talented graduates to help him decorate his palace at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/a-historical-guide-to-versailles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Â鶹APP.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">In 1863, Napoleon III decided to give the school independence from the French state. The school\u2019s name was then officially changed to <i>l&#8217;\u00c9cole des beaux arts<\/i>!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">So, what could you expect to study in this new and improved fine arts school? There were two curriculums available to its students: the <b>&#8220;Academy of Painting and Sculpture&#8221;<\/b> and the<b> &#8220;Academy of Architecture.&#8221;<\/b>\u00a0Both options focused on studying the most classic of all art: from Ancient Greece and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top10\/top-10-interesting-facts-about-paris-during-the-roman-empire\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rome<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_21199\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/640px-ecole_nationale_superieure_des_beaux-arts_amphitheatre_2.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21199\" class=\"size-full wp-image-21199\" src=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/640px-ecole_nationale_superieure_des_beaux-arts_amphitheatre_2.jpeg\" alt=\"A lecture hall inside the school\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/640px-ecole_nationale_superieure_des_beaux-arts_amphitheatre_2.jpeg 640w, https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/640px-ecole_nationale_superieure_des_beaux-arts_amphitheatre_2-300x200.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-21199\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A lecture hall inside the school by KoS &#8211; WikiCommons<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Competition was fierce at the school, and students were required to prove their skills by completing basic drawing assignments before they could move on to the more complicated stuff like painting and figure drawing. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">In addition to this, each year, one special student was awarded the <i>Grand Prix de Rome,<\/i> which included a scholarship to study art in Rome. Many of the artists that won the scholarship went on to become world famous: Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Jean-Honor\u00e9 Fragonard are just a few. Surprisingly, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/what-to-do-in-the-rodin-museum-in-paris\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sculptor Auguste Rodin<\/a> applied for the scholarship, and was rejected, three times! Rodin is one of my absolute favorite artists, so you can imagine my surprise when I learned this! This just goes to prove how intense the competition was at the school.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Flash forward to May1968 and the student riots. After the protests were over, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top-5-fun-facts-about-parisian-architecture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">architecture<\/a> department was separated from the rest of the school. The school was renamed the <i>\u00c9cole nationale sup\u00e9rieure des Beaux-Arts, <\/i>and is considered to be the top art school in France. Think, the Ivy League art school in France. It is nestled between the rue Bonaparte and the Quai Malaquais. According to the school\u2019s website, most of the buildings date back from the 17th and 19th centuries. The oldest buildings were constructed in the early 17th century as a part of a monastery. These buildings were actually converted into the Museum of French Monuments during the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top-5-fun-facts-about-the-french-revolution\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">French Revolution<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">After the museum closed in 1816, the buildings were given to the School of Fine Arts. The rest of the buildings are thanks to an architect named F\u00e9lix Duban<\/span><span class=\"s3\">. Duban was commissioned to work on the main building in 1830, and he also aided in realigning the campus in general.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p8\"><span class=\"s1\">All of the buildings in the complex were classified as historical monuments in 1972! You\u2019re not allowed to enter the school if you are not a student, but they do put of exhibitions. Visit their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beauxartsparis.fr\/en\/\"><span class=\"s4\">website<\/span><\/a> to learn more! <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p8\"><span class=\"s1\">The school itself not only boasts some amazing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/paris-marais-finest-architecture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">architecture<\/a>, it is also the birthplace of an architectural movement called, not surprisingly, the <i>Beaux Arts<\/i> movement. This architectural style is considered to be a combination of French Neoclassic, Gothic, and Renaissance styles, with the incorporation of glass and iron. If you look around Â鶹APP, you\u2019re sure to spot some of the <i>Beaux Arts<\/i> look! Is the Grand Palais coming to mind?
