In Lisbon west there is a hillside that starts next to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/where-to-see-wildlife-in-lisbon\/\">Lisbon\u2019s Botanical Gardens,<\/a> at the summit you\u2019ll find the most beautiful church in Lisbon .<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">To the Portuguese, Bas\u00edlica da Estrela is known as the <em>Royal Basilica and Convent of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus<\/em>. It\u2019s a <\/span><span class=\"s3\">ancient <\/span><span class=\"s4\">carmelite convent<\/span><span class=\"s3\"> that was completed in 1790. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s3\">For anyone with an interest in foreign clergy or late Baroque\/neoclassical architecture the <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Bas\u00edlica da Estrela is an unmissable landmark in the Portuguese capital. It is One of the Most Ornate Churches in Lisbon<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Bas\u00edlica da Estrela was built under the order of Queen Maria I of Portugal. The exterior is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/a-quick-guide-to-lisbons-architecture\/\">design masterpiece<\/a> \u2014 fit for a queen, after all. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Inside is simply a work of art. High ceilings, detailed murals,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>geometric marble floors, gold balustrades and a teal colored organ, one of the only of its kind. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The famous nativity scene displayed in the church is the work of sculptor Joaquim Machado de Castro. There are over 300 characters depicted in this scene, all made by hand. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Queen Maria I\u2019s tomb is located in the right transept. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">To visit the church is free to all. There is a Park In Front of the <\/span><span class=\"s5\">Bas\u00edlica da Estrela in Lisbon<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s1\">The church is built just behind the beautiful Jardim da Estrela. This was the children can play safely in the park while mommy and daddy, or mommy and mommy, or daddy and daddy (it\u2019s 2019) marvel at the Basilica. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s1\">On weekends in the summer the Jardim da Estrela holds antique <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top-5-food-markets-in-lisbon\/\">markets<\/a> and free jazz concerts. Follow their social media to keep up with the pending events!<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">3. The View From the Rooftop of the <\/span><span class=\"s5\">Bas\u00edlica da Estrela in Lisbon<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p10\"><span class=\"s1\">In addition to the two bell towers the church also features a massive dome overhead. Up here one finds an array of statues depicting saints throughout the history of Lisbon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p10\"><span class=\"s1\">You\u2019ll have to brave the many flights of stairs to get you into the bell towers and dome. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/best-rooftop-bars-in-lisbon\/\">rooftop view over Lisbon<\/a> is one of the best money can buy. The towers and dome require payment of <\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u20ac4 to gain access. Small price to pay once you see the city from up there.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p10\"><span class=\"s1\">Note that the towers are not recommended for anyone who suffers from claustrophobia; the stairwells that take you up are tiny and dark. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">4. There are Great Restaurants Surrounding the <\/span><span class=\"s5\">Bas\u00edlica da Estrela in Lisbon<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s7\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/tour\/type\/free-tours\/?town=lisbon-walking-tours\">Free guided walking tour<\/a><\/span><span class=\"s1\">s through Lisbon give you the best of both worlds: you\u2019re walked between the most iconic of attractions while great restaurant and entertainment spots are pointed out along the way for you to enjoy afterwards. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The summit of the hill where we find the Bas\u00edlica da Estrela isn\u2019t something many people want to rush down from right away. Hot Portuguese coffee and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top-10-portuguese-desserts\/\">pastel de natas<\/a> baked to perfection; the perfect way to follow any viewing of a Lisbon landmark. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Just behind the coffee shop there\u2019s a Portuguese cafe called<em> Pastelaria Cintilante<\/em>. They are open early, from 7am all the way through until midnight. The perfect pairing to your visit to the church no matter the time of day. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">5. It is One of the Least Crowded <\/span><span class=\"s5\">Churches in Lisbon<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">You\u2019d be surprised at how many people this is the selling point for. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Despite being possibly the most beautiful church in Lisbon, the Bas\u00edlica da Estrela remains largely overshadowed by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/a-visit-to-lisbons-sao-roque-church\/\">Church of Sao Roque<\/a> and National Pantheon. Travelers to Lisbon make these two the priority, giving little regard to the lesser known gems that the city may hold. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The perk of this is that the Bas\u00edlica da Estrela is one of the least crowded tourist attractions in Lisbon.
