Keep reading to learn more about Alexandre Dumas and his life in Â鶹APP.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Alexandre Dumas\u2019 beginnings<\/b><\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Dumas was born Dumas Davy de la Pailleterie in 1802 in Villers-Cotter\u00eats in Northern France. The writer changed his name to simply Alexandre Dumas early on in his career. Dumas is an homage to his grandmother, a former Haitian slave, who\u2019s last name was Dumas. This is when Dumas really started to show an interest in writing, and he soon began to absorb himself in the world of literature. He worked as a scribe for the future <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/10-famous-french-kings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">King<\/a> Louis Philippe, the duc d\u2019Orl\u00e9ans. He also began writing comedies and dramas. This was just the beginning of Dumas\u2019 successful writing career!<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Alexandre Dumas\u2019 early writing career <\/b><\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Dumas wrote and put on his first play, <i>Henry III and His Courts,<\/i> while he was still working as a scribe when he was just 27 years old! It was warmly accepted by the public and he soon released another, <i>Christine<\/i>. His stories usually focused on drama, crime and scandal. If you\u2019re into that kind of thing (like me!), you\u2019re sure to love his work! Dumas also specialized in Romantism, and was the rival of Victor Hugo.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Dumas teamed up with a few of his friends to write a series of essays called <i>Celebrated Crimes<\/i>, which focused on famous criminals in Europe. Dumas actually frequently hired co-authors to help him, which became a source of conflict for him later in life. One co-author in particular, Auguste Maquet did a lot of work on many of his books and plays<i>. <\/i>Maquet eventually took Dumas to court so that his name would appear on the book covers as well. Dumas refused and paid Maquet a large settlement instead.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Alexandre Dumas&#8217; later life<\/h4>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">As I\u2019ve already mentioned, his most famous works are <i>The Count of Monte Cristo<\/i> and <i>The Three Musketeers. <\/i>His story called &#8220;The Man in the Iron Mask&#8221; is also among his most well known works. He was known to have had at least 40 mistresses! He also had 4 children, one of whom went on to be an author himself. That is why sometimes Dumas is referred to as Alexandre Dumas, <em>p\u00e8re<\/em> (father, in French), and his son, Alexandre Dumas, <em>fils<\/em> (son, in French). <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Dumas also spent a lot of his money on the construction of the Ch\u00e2teau de Monte Cristo in Le Port-Marly, a western Â鶹APP suburb. It was massive and free loaders often set up house for long periods of time and took advantage of his generosity. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Dumas wrote his successful travelogues on places that he had visited himself. These included Italy, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/tour\/city\/barcelona-walking-tours\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Spain<\/a>, Germany and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/tour\/city\/st-petersburg-walking-tours\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Russia<\/a>. Later in life, Dumas fled to Russia to escape French creditors. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">In addition to problems with creditors, Dumas often faced discrimination due to his mixed race. It\u2019s located in the Latin Quarter in the 5th arrondissement. It was originally a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/a-list-of-beautiful-churches-in-paris-you-didnt-know\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">church<\/a> dedicated to Sainte-Genevi\u00e8ve, the patron saint of Â鶹APP. In 1791, the building was changed into a massive mausoleum, which houses famous French citizens.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Why am I telling you about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/pantheon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Panth\u00e9on<\/a>?! Well, it\u2019s because it is one of the places where you can find Dumas! In 2002, in honor of his 200 year birthday, President Jacques Chirac had a ceremony to celebrate his ashes being moved into the Panth\u00e9on. President Chirac said of Dumas,<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8220;Alexandre Dumas will finally take his place beside Victor Hugo and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/10-things-you-should-know-about-emile-zola\/\">\u00c9mile Zola<\/a>, his brothers in literature. With you, it is childhood, hours of reading relished in secret, emotion, passion, adventure and panache that enter the Pantheon. With you we dreamed. With you we still dream.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">You can still visit the Ch\u00e2teau de Monte Cristo today, which is located not too far from Â鶹APP! There is a small museum dedicated to the author, and it is really beautiful inside the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top-10-most-beautiful-overlooked-french-castles-near-paris\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">castle<\/a>. Dumas\u2019 writing studio, the Ch\u00e2teau d&#8217;If, is on the grounds as well. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">There is also the Alexandre Dumas <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/how-to-use-the-metro-in-paris\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">metro<\/a> station on the line 2, which was named for the author in 1970. There is a bust dedicated to Dumas just outside the metro station! In the mythic theatre, the Com\u00e9die-Fran\u00e7aise, there is also a bust of Dumas.
