Many of them date back to times when the clergy ruled the cities, so their interiors needed to reflect immense wealth on par with royalty. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">If you\u2019re walking through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/what-to-do-in-lisbon-around-bairro-alto\/\">Bairro Alto<\/a> district in Lisbon you\u2019ll eventually pass the Church of S\u00e3o Roque. The exterior resembles somewhat of a children\u2019s Catholic school building. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Once inside, you bask in one of the richest church interiors in all of Lisbon, perhaps even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/the-best-of-cristiano-ronaldo-and-portugal\/\">Portugal<\/a>. How did this monumental space land up here? And what function does it serve today? Take a visit to Lisbon\u2019s S\u00e3o Roque Church and find out. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">Location of <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Lisbon&#8217;s S\u00e3o Roque Church<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Situated to the west of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/best-restaurants-in-alfama\/\">Alfama<\/a> district, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/what-to-do-in-lisbon-around-bairro-alto\/\">Bairro Alto<\/a> is a hillside region in Lisbon that is made up of cobblestone streets and beautiful city views. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">This neighborhood is as loved by day as it is by night. The nightlife is comprised of weird and wonderful bars &amp; traditional Portuguese restaurants that showcase live music each night of the week. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/tour\/city\/paris-walking-tours\/\"><span class=\"s3\">free guided walking tour<\/span><\/a> is the best way to fully immerse oneself in all that Bairro Alto has to offer. If you walk directly south down this street you\u2019ll eventually come to the S\u00e3o Roque Church on your left hand side. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">You\u2019ll begin to understand the importance of nightlife to this district once you arrive. All of the adjacent roads and side streets are filled to the brim with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/the-best-6-cafes-of-lisbon\/\">cafes<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/the-5-best-restaurants-in-belem-lisbon\/\">restaurants<\/a> and cocktail bars. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The church is open from 9am to 5pm daily and entrance is absolutely free. There is a \u20ac2.50 cover to explore the museum section, however if you visit on Sundays this is free as well. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">History of <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Lisbon&#8217;s S\u00e3o Roque Church<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\">The church space was originally a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top10\/10-facts-about-la-crypte-du-martyrium-de-saint-denis\/\">shrine<\/a> that housed artifacts in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top10\/10-facts-about-la-crypte-du-martyrium-de-saint-denis\/\">memory<\/a> of Saint Rocco, which translates to <\/span><span class=\"s4\">S\u00e3o Roque<\/span><span class=\"s1\">. He became a saint thanks to his work in healing victims of the plague that raged through Europe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Jesuits made up a large sector of the Roman Catholic church and the S\u00e3o Roque Church eventually became their official home in the 16th century. The Jesuits brought with them a large amount of disposable income that saw the transformation of the church into one of the most opulent places in all of Lisbon. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Incredibly, the S\u00e3o Roque Church survived the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/all-about-the-great-lisbon-earthquake-of-1755\/\">earthquake of 1755<\/a> that ripped most of Lisbon apart. It was one of very few buildings in the west of the city that weren\u2019t completely destroyed by the natural phenomenon. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p9\"><span class=\"s5\">Architecture at <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Lisbon&#8217;s S\u00e3o Roque Church<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Inside the church you\u2019ll find nine chapels and four alters. You\u2019ll be able to make your way around each individual chapel, some holding tombs inside of them such as the Main Chapel which is the resting place of Jo\u00e3o de Borja. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Italian and Baroque influence inside of this church is undeniable. It is made from a combination of Amethyst and Lapis Lazuli crystals combine with Carrara marble. It is thought to be the only alter of its kind in the world.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p9\"><span class=\"s5\">Museum at <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Lisbon&#8217;s S\u00e3o Roque Church<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The fine work of the goldsmiths and remnants of the art collections that once hung in the space desperately needed a place to call home by the time the 1900s rolled around. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In 1905 the Museum of the Treasure was erected to join the S\u00e3o Roque Church. It is one of the first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/a-visit-to-lisbons-oriental-museum\/\">museums<\/a> ever to be opened in Lisbon. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The museum intended to show the public a curated timeline of events that lead up to the existence of the church in the present day. These were collected and placed in the museum. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top-5-museums-in-lisbon\/\">museum<\/a> at S\u00e3o Roque Church offers a small cafe to visitors where once can refuel between exploration of this landmark in Lisbon. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p9\"><span class=\"s5\">Nearby Attractions at <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Lisbon&#8217;s S\u00e3o Roque Church<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">While you\u2019re in this part of town you absolutely must take a short walk from S\u00e3o Roque Church through to the ruins of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/why-you-need-to-visit-the-carmo-convent-in-lisbon\/\"> Carmo Convent<\/a> a few roads away. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">As I said, very few buildings in Lisbon survived the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/all-about-the-great-lisbon-earthquake-of-1755\/\">great earthquake<\/a>; Carmo Convent was amongst the less fortunate vicinities. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The ruins of this gothic style church are still open for public visitation.
