There was also the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top-3-most-enchanting-libraries-near-lisbon\/\">Lello &amp; Irm\u00e3o Bookstore<\/a>, where it is rumored that J.K. Rowling found her initial inspiration to write the Harry Potter series. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Just when I thought I\u2019d seen it all, a friend asked if I\u2019d made some time to visit the Libaria Bertrand in Lisbon, just west of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top-5-fun-facts-about-alfama\/\">Alfama<\/a>; \u201cIt\u2019s like meeting with everyone and everything you\u2019ve ever admired throughout history, all in one room\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Unbeknownst to me, the world\u2019s oldest bookstore was basically on my doorstep. \u201cWhat? No! If you do that math you\u2019ll realize that this bookstore has been in business for almost 300 years. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Where the store is located now, west of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/best-restaurants-in-alfama\/\">Alfama<\/a> in Chiado, is not actually the original location. After just a few years of ownership, Faure made the decision to turn over the business to the Bertrand brothers. It was these two who managed to grow the bookstore into the chain that it is today with over 50 successful vicinities all over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top-10-portuguese-phrases-for-a-trip-to-lisbon\/\">Portugal<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The premises in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/what-to-do-in-lisbon-around-chiado\/\">Chiado<\/a> remains the oldest. The certificate of confirmation from the Guinness Book of Records is displayed proudly on the entrance window. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">You can come past and visit on your own accord or simply join a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/tour\/city\/paris-walking-tours\/\"><span class=\"s3\">free guided walking tour<\/span><\/a> that will take you through the Chiado area en route to the historic Alfama.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s2\">Interior of <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Livraria Bertrand in Lisbon<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">From the outside the bookstore appeared to be but just a compact corner shop. The space is somewhat comparable to a church in the sense of it being so quiet and peaceful, even in its most chaotic moments. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Being in business for almost 300 years made renovations and modern touches a necessity to this space. There is nothing distinctly \u201cold\u201d about the interior at Bertrand, however as you move through the space you\u2019ll catch glimpses of the infrastructure of the years gone by: a lonely, struggling pillar or a patch of exposed brick whose family remains covered in plaster. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p8\"><span class=\"s4\">What to Buy at <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Livraria Bertrand in Lisbon<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Despite its worldwide popularity, Bertrand Bookstore keeps things distinctly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/all-about-bacalhau-a-portuguese-dish\/\">Portuguese<\/a>. I\u2019d say about 95% of the stock is centered around Portuguese language books ranging between everything from cooking to fiction; science to esoteric; biographical to photography. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">There is a small English desiccated section within the bookstore that features most of the classic works and a few contemporary bestsellers. The store will even give you the option of having one of their approval stickers placed inside the cover, stating where exactly the copy was purchased. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It you make your way deep enough into the back of the bookstore you\u2019ll come to a small cafe.
