This is particularly true if you happen to be attempting to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/how-to-find-english-speaking-movies-in-paris\/\">speak<\/a> the local language of said destination. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Being able to correctly implement grammatical rules and syntax structures for any language is a skill that takes years to master \u2014 even in ones own mother tongue. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">For the most part, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/where-to-eat-traditional-french-cuisine-in-paris\/\">French<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/how-to-find-english-speaking-movies-in-paris\/\">English<\/a> is a simple crossover. It expresses the state of having severely over eaten. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">As you can see, the direct translation is not only hilarious but also completely nonsensical. One can only imagine that perhaps the intent was to describe ones belly being so full up that their back teeth were submerged in said foods? Who knows. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4>2.<\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Phrase: <\/b>Chacun voit midi \u00e0 sa porte<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Direct translation: <\/b>Each person sees noon at his\/her door<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Intention:<\/b><\/span><b> <\/b><span class=\"s1\">This is one of the more harmless phrases that is easy to get to the bottom of if you put some thought into it. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/where-to-eat-traditional-french-cuisine-in-paris\/\">French<\/a> use this saying when trying to encourage one another to stop comparing themselves to others, or others to themselves. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The saying targets perception and how we all have a very different experience &amp; view of things depending on where we are in life. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/how-to-flirt-in-french\/\">French<\/a> say they pay through the nose, but what they mean is that the item in question was more expensive than they expected. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">When the price of something has deceived them they also like to say <i>acheter chat en poche<\/i>; which directly translates to &#8220;to buy a pig in a poke\u201d. Good luck with that one. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\">7.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Phrase: <\/b>C\u2019est le petit J\u00e9sus en culotte de velours<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Direct translation: <\/b>It\u2019s like Baby Jesus in velvet underpants<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Intention:<\/b><\/span><b> <\/b><span class=\"s1\">This is probably my absolute favorite expression in the French language \u2014 especially when it needs to be translated to someone in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top-10-french-words-english-people-love\/\">English<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The first time I heard it I was sat at a dinner with friends in Le Marais after a day of wonderful <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/tour\/city\/paris-walking-tours\/\"><span class=\"s4\"><b>free guided walking tour<\/b><\/span><\/a>s around the area. Someone said it and I nearly choked on my food \u2014 why on Earth would baby Jesus be wearing velvet undies?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Turns out this is how the French pay homage to their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top-10-things-you-need-to-know-about-wine-in-paris\/\">best wines<\/a>.
