Some tourists actually enjoy leaning and speaking the \u2018Sheng\u2019 as a majority of the people in the city are the youth hence it\u2019s easier to interact in social events.<\/p>\n<p>But that aside, if you are an English or Swahili speaking tourist, you will fit right in. It is polite to say hello as you meet people who will be taking care of you. For example, your taxi driver, the receptionist at the hotel, your guide\u2026Some locals will even say hello to you regardless of where you meet, simply because you look or speak differently. In that case, then your answer to \u2018jambo\/hujambo\u2019 should be \u2018nzuri\/sijambo\u2019.<\/p>\n<h3>\u2018Nzuri\/Sijambo\u2019<\/h3>\n<p>This means \u2018fine\/I\u2019m fine\u2019. It\u2019s the polite way of replying to a greeting. Add a smile to it and the greeting is complete. Sometimes this response can also be used in the case where someone says \u2018habari gani?\u2019 \u2013 \u2018how are you?\u2019<\/p>\n<h3>\u2018Kwaheri\u2019<\/h3>\n<p>This means \u2018goodbye\u2019. As expected, you would use this phrase when parting ways with someone you\u2019ve been around for some time. \u2018Kwaherini\u2019 would be used to say goodbye to a group of people.<\/p>\n<h3>\u2018Tafadhali\u2019<\/h3>\n<p>This is Swahili for \u2018please\u2019. You will use the phrase a lot while asking for things. You will only need to add the phrase at the end. For example, \u2018how much is the fare please?\u2019 would be\u2026\u2019nauli ni pesa ngapi tafadhali? Just like its English meaning, this phrase will be used to ask for directions, ask questions at your hotel or strangers, etc. Sometimes you will combine the phrase with \u2018tafadhali\u2019. For example, if you want to know where a specific hotel is, you would ask in English<br \/>\n\u2018Excuse me please\u2026where is the Kempinski Hotel located? Just like with \u2018tafadhali\u2019, you will most probably use this phrase when thanking those that give you directions or clarify information on your map, etc. To the word \u2018asante\u2019, you can also add \u2018sana\u2019. Thus, \u2018asante sana\u2019. This means \u2018thank you very much\u2019. In addition, you can also use the phrase \u2018nashukuru\u2019 (\u2018I thank you\u2019) instead of \u2018asante\u2019. Means the same thing.<\/p>\n<h3>\u2018Ndio\/Hapana\u2019<\/h3>\n<p>These two phrases will normally go together as you will be using either or in replying to specific direct questions. They translate to \u2018yes for \u2018ndio\u2019 and \u2018no\u2019 for \u2018hapana\u2019.<\/p>\n<h3>\u2018Sawa\u2019<\/h3>\n<p>This means \u2018OK\u2019. You are agreeing to what you are being told or want to show that you have understood what you have been told.<\/p>\n<h3>\u2018Leo\/Kesho\/Jana\u2019<\/h3>\n<p>\u2018Leo\u2019 means \u2018today\u2019, \u2018kesho\u2019 means \u2018tomorrow\u2019, \u2018jana\u2019 means \u2018yesterday\u2019. These are phrases that might be used together as you will either be explaining to someone when you landed, when you will be leaving, or when you want to go and check out a specific attraction. This is of course with the assumption that you are not in the city for long.<\/p>\n<h3>\u2018Nataka\u2019<\/h3>\n<p>This translates to \u2018I\u2019d like\u2019. It is a phrase you will use a lot when requesting for services in your hotel, or while shopping. For example, asking your taxi driver to take you to town\u2026\u2019I\u2019d like to go to town please\u2019 \u2013 \u2018Nataka kuenda town tafadhali\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The above are just some of the phrases you will want to know before making your trip to Nairobi, or to any other Swahili speaking city. You definitely get more points with the locals for speaking their language, and you will be happy knowing you made the effort to learn beforehand.
