Instead, however, the space was used to form the cities mausoleum in which the remains of distinguished French citizens are kept. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The interest comes in the ratio of women to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/5-things-to-know-about-parisian-men\/\">men<\/a> when considering those that are buried in the space. At present there are 72 men\u2026 and only 5 women. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">So who are these women of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/things-to-do-near-the-pantheon\/\">Pantheon<\/a> and what caused them to make the cut to be included in this undeniably this male dominated space?<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s3\">Germaine Tillion<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">at the Â鶹APP Pantheon<\/span><\/h4>\n<h6 class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">Born 1907<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Died 2008<\/span><\/h6>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Germaine Tillion was a French ethnologist. She is best known for the massive role she played in the resistance movements during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/world-war-ii-paris\/\">World War II<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">During the turmoil, Tillion would help war prisoners flee; she once helped a Jewish family keep their anonymity by giving them her own family papers to use. She was thrown in a German concentration camp but managed to escape in 1945 during a raid by the Swedish Red Cross. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Once she was out, Tillion remained vocal in different French politics. She was also avidly involved in the efforts to emancipate women throughout the Mediterranean. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Although she passed in 2008, Tillion was only buried in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/things-to-do-near-the-pantheon\/\">Pantheon<\/a> in 2015 once her extensive work and efforts were honoured. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\">Marie Curie at the Â鶹APP Pantheon<\/span><\/h4>\n<h6 class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">Born 1867<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Died 1934<\/span><\/h6>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Despite being of Polish descent, Marie Curie lived and worked as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top-10-most-beautiful-overlooked-french-castles-near-paris\/\">French<\/a> physicist and chemist. The remains of herself and her husband (who passed 28 years before she did) were only transferred to the Pantheon in 1995. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\">Sophie Berthelot at the Â鶹APP Pantheon<\/span><\/h4>\n<h6 class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">Born 1837<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Died 1907<\/span><\/h6>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The story of Sophie Berthelot is an interesting one. She was technically the first woman ever to be buried in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/things-to-do-near-the-pantheon\/\">Pantheon<\/a> \u2014 however her access was granted not based on any work, merit or acknowledgment in the greater scheme of France. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Instead, Sophoe Berthelot was buried in the Pantheon simply because she and her husband both passed away on the same day. Since the burial, worldwide feminists have used Sophie Berthelot as an example of how its easier for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top-10-womens-shoe-stores-in-paris\/\">women<\/a> to get into the Pantheon on their husbands merits rather than their own. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\">Genevi\u00e8ve de Gaulle-Anthonioz at the Â鶹APP Pantheon<\/span><\/h4>\n<h6 class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">Born 1920<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Died 2002<\/span><\/h6>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Genevi\u00e8ve de Gaulle-Anthonioz was a big part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/where-to-eat-traditional-french-cuisine-in-paris\/\">French<\/a> Resistance after France was occupied in 1940. Her actual remains aren\u2019t in the Pantheon, as it was her wish to leave these with her husbands grave in Bossey. In 1988 she went on to become a key member of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/how-to-flirt-in-french\/\">French<\/a> Economic and Social Council and fought against poverty in France. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Her story is a powerful one and her spot in the Â鶹APP Pantheon is well deserved. Much of the history relative to the iconic landmarks in Â鶹APP bare some connection to the work done by Genevi\u00e8ve. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/tour\/city\/paris-walking-tours\/\"><span class=\"s5\">free guided walking tour<\/span><\/a> through the neighborhoods is the best was to ensure you don\u2019t miss any key information!<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\">Simone Veil at the Â鶹APP Pantheon<\/span><\/h4>\n<h6 class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">Born 1927<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Died 2017<\/span><\/h6>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Simone Veil is the fifth and most recent addition to the very small <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/the-best-dior-perfumes-for-women\/\">women\u2019s<\/a> section of Â鶹APP\u2019 Pantheon. What\u2019s interesting is that it took public outcry in order for Veil to be included in the space. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Veil was a big women\u2019s rights activist as well as a Holocaust surviver. The demands of the people were heard and met and have created a beautiful platform from which the conversation to include more women in the space can continue. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">When wandering the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/best-students-hang-out-in-the-latin-quarter\/\">Latin Quarter<\/a> of Â鶹APP try take some time between bars and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/10-unmissable-bookstores-in-paris\/\">bookstores<\/a> to go pay homage to these five souls.
