It is reported that there are only 300 of the wolves left in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/5-amazing-cities-you-need-to-visit-in-portugal\/\">Portugal<\/a>, with more than half living in close proximity to Lisbon . <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Setting aside a day during your travels to explore one of the places that house these creatures is never a bad idea. This is especially true if you are traveling with children and would like them to connect to the natural side of the city for a bit. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Tagus Estuary Natural Reserve in Lisbon <\/span><\/h4>\n<h6 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Av. dos Combatentes da Grande Guerra 1<\/span><\/h6>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Tagus Estuary Natural Reserve takes up most of the immediate land directly to the north east of the city. It is the largest wetland in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/8-amazing-surfing-spots-in-portugal\/\">Portugal<\/a> and the number one spot for birdwatching in the region. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In short, the land is beautiful. It spans a massive 14,000 hectares and is virtually impossible to see all at once. I loved seeing the flamingoes; the short toed eagles are exquisite as well if you\u2019re lucky enough to encounter one. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The thing with the Tagus Estuary is that it is not open at all on weekends, you\u2019ll have to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/10-things-you-should-pack-for-a-trip-to-portugal\/\">visit during the week<\/a>. An entrance fee is charged on the day depending what time you arrive. The reserve closes at 5pm though I would suggest entering well before 2pm at the latest if you want to make the most of your time. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Sado Estuary Natural Reserve in Lisbon<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Another day trip worth taking out of Lisbon would be to the Sado Estuary Natural Reserve near Set\u00fabal bay. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/best-beaches-in-lisbon\/\">water<\/a> here is warm and vast; so vast that is has become home to a colony of dolphins that can be spotted year round. They leave from Tr\u00f3ia and Set\u00fabal. If you can, the sunset tour would be the one to book! Think dolphins gliding all around you as the sun descends on a beautiful day in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/5-amazing-cities-you-need-to-visit-in-portugal\/\">Portugal<\/a> \u2014 beautiful. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">You can reach the reserve easily using any of the trains out of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top-5-fun-facts-about-alfama\/\">Alfama<\/a> in central Lisbon. It is directly across the bay of the Tagus. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s1\">Tapada Nacional de Mafra in Lisbon<\/span><\/h4>\n<h6 class=\"p8\"><span class=\"s1\">Port\u00e3o do Code\u00e7al<\/span><\/h6>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Back in 1747, King Jo\u00e3o V longed for a natural park solely for his leisure. Here deer, birds of prey, foxes and even wild boar roam the land and coexist quite effortlessly. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The park is only 45 minutes outside of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/the-ultimate-lisbon-shopping-guide\/\">Lisbon<\/a>. Aside from viewing the animals you\u2019ll have access to a variety of hikes and eco trails that take you through the land safely. There are also many tours and recreational activities on offer from the reception once arriving at the park. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The park is open daily between 9:30am and 5pm. Again, if you\u2019re only going to be able to enter after 2pm it may be better to save this attraction for another day when you have more time!<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s1\">Jardim Bot\u00e2nico Tropical in Lisbon<\/span><\/h4>\n<h6 class=\"p8\"><span class=\"s1\">Tv. Ferreiros a Bel\u00e9m 41<\/span><\/h6>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Situated in the well known town of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top-5-fun-facts-about-belem\/\">Belem<\/a> in Lisbon, the Botanical Gardens are a more laid back option to wildlife viewing inside of the city. Belem itself is a great place to get the feel for Lisbon; any <a href=\"https:\/\/https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/tour\/type\/free-tours\/?town=lisbon-walking-tours\/tour\/city\/paris-walking-tours\/\"><span class=\"s3\">free guided walking tour<\/span><\/a> will show you all there is to see in this neighborhood. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">You\u2019ll find the Botanical Garden toward the waters edge. Squirrels are also native to this space and rumor has it there is a small family of swans that inhabit one of the ponds. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">If you\u2019re into plants, the Botanical Garden is somewhat of a jungle compared to the rest of the parks in<a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/things-to-do-in-lisbon-in-june\/\"> Lisbon<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s1\">Lisbon Zoo in Lisbon<\/span><\/h4>\n<h6 class=\"p8\"><span class=\"s1\">Pra\u00e7a Marechal Humberto Delgado<\/span><\/h6>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Usually I avoid zoos at all costs, however when traveling with children this can be hard to do. Thankfully the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/the-best-6-cafes-of-lisbon\/\">Lisbon<\/a> Zoo in the north of the city works closely with a conservation program so as not to exploit the animals simply for public viewing. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In the enclosures they have everything from lion to cheetah. Whether you only have a few hours to kill, or an entire day trip is on the cards, you\u2019ll love seeing some of the wildlife that Portugal has to offer and the wildlife will love seeing you.
