It is said to be a haven for creative minds, giving them room to walk while stimulating their processes. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The evening were filled with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/a-complete-guide-to-jazz-culture-in-paris\/\">jazz<\/a>, booze and more cigarettes than you can imagine. Here the lost artists delved deep into one another\u2019s psyches in the presence of many well known French artists also living in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/5-places-to-experience-the-1920s-in-paris\/\">Âé¶¹APP in the 20s<\/a>; Picasso, Duchamp and Klein amongst them. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Gertrude Stein in Âé¶¹APP <\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The actual phrase \u201cThe Lost Generation\u201d was one coined by art collector and writer Gertrude Stein. She had moved to Âé¶¹APP in 1903 and made it her permanent home for the rest of her life. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It is said that Stein shared the phrase with her friend Ernest Hemingway first. The meet included the likes of Hemingway, Matisse, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/5-fascinating-facts-about-picasso\/\">Picasso<\/a>, Pound, Anderson and F. Scott Fitzgerald. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It is thanks to Stein and Hemingway that \u201cThe Lost Generation\u201d lives on. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Ernest Hemingway in Âé¶¹APP<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The legendary writer that is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/all-about-ernest-hemingways-life-in-paris\/\">Hemingway<\/a> can be seen as somewhat of a wandering soul in the grander scheme of the planet. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">He actually only spent six years calling Âé¶¹APP home during the 20s; however, this was a time that stayed with him \u2014 so much so that he went as far to coin his own Âé¶¹APPian phrase, famously referring to the city as \u201ca moveable feast\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Hemingway\u2019s first apartment can still be viewed over in the 5th arrondissement on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/what-to-do-in-the-left-bank-in-paris\/\">Âé¶¹APP\u2019 Left Bank<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15351\" style=\"width: 770px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15351\" class=\"size-full wp-image-15351\" src=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/ernest_hemingway_paris_1924.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"760\" height=\"564\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/ernest_hemingway_paris_1924.jpg 760w, https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/ernest_hemingway_paris_1924-300x223.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 760px) 100vw, 760px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-15351\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hemingway in Âé¶¹APP &#8211; by John F. Later in the 20s he dedicated his time to his personal works. <i>The Sun Also Rises<\/i> was published in 1926 and in it was the now famous phrase \u201cThe Lost Generation\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">His writing gives, in my opinion, the best recount of these times in Âé¶¹APP. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/all-about-ernest-hemingways-life-in-paris\/\">Hemingway<\/a> notes \u201c\u2026this is how Âé¶¹APP was in the early days when we were very poor, and very happy\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s1\">F. Scott Fitzgerald in Âé¶¹APP<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">After publishing the very successful<i> The Great Gatsby, <\/i>F. Scott Fitzgerald was a well known name around town during the 1920s in Âé¶¹APP. In celebration of his success, Fitzgerald is reported to have spent much of his time attending parties and nightclubs all over the city, particularly in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top10\/top-10-things-to-do-in-montmartre\/\">Montmartre<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Falling deeper and deeper into his own depression, Fitzgerald turned to alcohol to bridge the gaps. To summate things he one wrote: \u201cThe best of America drifts to Âé¶¹APP. The American in Âé¶¹APP is the best American.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Fitzgerald called Âé¶¹APP home from 1925. He quickly identified it as a place where many had lost their moral compass and agreed with the term \u201clost\u201d to describe the recluses. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Unlike the other recluses, however, Fitzgerald preferred to live near nature and not in the chaotic center of the city. His apartment was on the edge of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/the-parks-of-boulogne-and-vincennes-which-to-visit\/\">Bois de Boulogne<\/a>, the biggest park space in all of Âé¶¹APP. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p8\"><span class=\"s1\">T.S. Eliot<\/span><span class=\"s3\"> in Âé¶¹APP<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">From his first visit to Âé¶¹APP, <\/span><span class=\"s4\">T.S. Eliot<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> was in love. His thought was that he could settle in Âé¶¹APP and gradually learn to write in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/how-to-flirt-in-french\/\">French<\/a>, becoming one with the rest of the lost writers with whom he spent his time. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Eliot was never able to make this dream happen. He returned to the United States after just one year.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s1\">The Lost Generation in Âé¶¹APP <\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Visiting the 6th arrondissement today you\u2019ll find <i>Les Deux Magots<\/i> and <i>Caf\u00e9 de Flore<\/i>, two of the main stomping grounds of the Lost Generation clan. They are both still open for business today and you\u2019ll be able to enjoy a drink exactly as the group did way back when. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Not far away, in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/3-favourite-places-to-stay-in-montparnasse\/\">Montparnasse<\/a>, there is another spot called the Dingo Bar. This is where Hemingway and Fitzgerald first met one another.
