Not far down the bank, toward the centre of Â鶹APP there used to exist one of the best known and most luxurious brothels in the world. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Between the years of 1878 and 1946, Le Chabanais brought in customers from all across Europe. Kings, lords and the occasional lady traveled far and wide to come and see what Le Chabanais was all about. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Today 12 Rue Chabanais is just another office building in the 1st arrondissement of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top-10-hotel-bars-in-paris\/\">Â鶹APP<\/a>. The walls hold untold secrets that are getting harder and harder to tap into as time goes by. Here is what we know for sure about this important part of Â鶹APPian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/the-all-important-history-of-the-baguette\/\">history<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Location of Le Chabanais in Â鶹APP <\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Â鶹APP city center is luxurious in general; it has been for the better part of history. Each floor was used for a variety of alternatively decorated rooms and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top-3-romantic-hotels-in-paris\/\">suites<\/a>; from Hindu themed right through to Japanese opulence. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">At the time of its reign there would have been over 300 brothels in operation around Â鶹APP. Somehow, Le Chabanais thrived above all others and managed to stay in business even through the most turbulent of times. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Concept of Le Chabanais in Â鶹APP<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The concept was simple\u2026 ultimate luxury meets ultimate sophistication meets ultimate fun. The space was an absolute escapists dream \u2014 once inside it was hard to tell what continent you were on, let alone what day of the week it was. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The women who worked Le Chabanais called the six floor building home. By day, an eclectic space filled with the divine femme. The interiors resembled something close to what the royals enjoyed in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/versailles-vs-fontainebleau\/\">palaces of France<\/a>. At the time, it cost 1.7 million francs to get the building into the state it needed to be in. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The investment paid off in just a few short years. Le Chabanais became, and remains, the most profitable brothel on the entire European continent. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Patrons of Le Chabanais in Â鶹APP<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">As mentioned, the extravagant nature of Le Chabanais attracted all walks of society. Amongst them, the ruler at the time, Edward the VII himself. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In order to accommodate the leader, the brothel constructed a personalized suite for him to make use of. He booked the suite out a year in advance, allowing him to make use of it at any time. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Inside of it was a giant sphinx themed bathtub made out of copper. The king then requested that the entire tub be filled with Champagne instead. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The King\u2019s suite at Le Chabanais was usually referred to by Â鶹APPian locals as \u201cthe second <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/a-historical-guide-to-versailles\/\">palace<\/a>\u201d. This should give you a good idea of how eccentric the interior was. He even brought in the famous cabinetmaker of the Rue du Faubourg Saint-Antoine in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/an-insiders-guide-to-theatres-in-paris\/\">Â鶹APP<\/a> to construct him a double decker \u201clove seat\u201d within the space. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">We are left with only our imaginations to know exactly what this structure was used for exactly. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s1\">Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and <\/span><span class=\"s3\">of Le Chabanais in Â鶹APP<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was a post-<a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top-5-fun-facts-about-impressionism-and-impressionist-painters\/\">impressionistic<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/5-interesting-facts-about-the-french-painter-renoir\/\">French painter.<\/a> He is known for having lived most of his life in and amongst the women in the brothels in Â鶹APP. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">At Le Chabanais there were a total of 30 courtesans at any give time. You can still stroll past the 6 rue des Moulins location on any <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/tour\/city\/paris-walking-tours\/\"><span class=\"s4\">free guided walking tour<\/span><\/a> of the 1st arrondissement. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">To thank the brothel and the women inside, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec donated another 16 of his works to the space. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s5\">Remnants <\/span><span class=\"s1\">of Le Chabanais in Â鶹APP<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">There remains very little evidence of what once existed within this space back in the day. All we have is word of mouth and literary accounts from patrons willing to disclose very risqu\u00e9 times in their lives. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What we can do is admire the architecture and historic location that Le Chabanais left in the centre of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/5-songs-that-were-inspired-by-paris\/\">Â鶹APP<\/a>. A once thriving part of the French economy and biggest tourist attraction for over 50 years. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">If you\u2019d like to connect to this era more authentically then <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/things-to-do-near-pigalle\/\">Pigalle\u2019s<\/a> main strip is the closest you\u2019ll get during this day and age.
