And in fairness, both Porto and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top-3-most-enchanting-libraries-near-lisbon\/\">Lisbon<\/a> share very similar elements that make them more alike than often noted; the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/things-to-do-in-lisbon-in-august\/\">beaches<\/a>\u2026 the architecture\u2026 the wine!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">As gorgeous as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top-5-best-areas-to-stay-in-lisbon\/\">city<\/a> of Porto may be, there is just something about the energy in Lisbon that brings me back every time. It\u2019s not secret that some of the best museums in Portugal call Lisbon home. The National Museum Of Ancient Art is a wonder; as is the exquisite Museu Cole\u00e7\u00e3o Berardo. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/a-locals-guide-to-lisbon-street-art\/\">Art<\/a> is the first area where Lisbon wins hands down. Following this there are a number of other very significant elements that make Lisbon my go-to when in this land of the Portuguese. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In theory, the two cities exist within such close proximity to one another that doing both isn\u2019t that inconvenient. However, sometimes time is simply not on your side and a decision needs to be made. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Here is why Lisbon should be first on your list\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">The Alfama in Lisbon <\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The centre of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/lisbon-in-three-days\/\">Lisbon<\/a>, where the winding streets meet the remnants of the Portuguese Medieval architecture, is known as Alfama.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15245\" style=\"width: 977px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15245\" class=\"size-full wp-image-15245\" src=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/photo-1501927023255-9063be98970c.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"967\" height=\"725\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/photo-1501927023255-9063be98970c.jpg 924w, https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/photo-1501927023255-9063be98970c-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/photo-1501927023255-9063be98970c-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/photo-1501927023255-9063be98970c-816x612.jpg 816w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 967px) 100vw, 967px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-15245\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Alfama, Lisbon &#8211; by Liam McKay &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/unsplash.com\/photos\/VHWyqXsWHg0\">Unsplash<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/what-to-do-in-lisbon-in-alfama\/\">Alfama<\/a> district is picturesque, to say the least. Soft white limestone encompasses most of the buildings, similar to the rest of Lisbon. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Alfama makes it\u2019s was down through Lisbon all the way to the Tagus. The soft hues of the pastel architecture are whimsical to observe. I\u2019ll never forget my first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/tour\/type\/free-tours\/?town=lisbon-walking-tours\"><span class=\"s2\">free guided walking tour<\/span><\/a> through this part of town. If you\u2019re into taking pictures then this is where you want to be!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The historic core of Porto is the Ribeira. Similar in stature and charm but (in my opinion) not nearly as aesthetically pleasing! You\u2019ll stroll down the historic Mercado da Ribeira; which has become one of the trendiest places to see and be seen in the nations capital. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Mercado de Fus\u00e3o, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top-5-food-markets-in-lisbon\/\">Fusion Market<\/a>, over in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/what-to-do-in-lisbon-around-martim-moniz-and-intendente\/\">Martim Moniz<\/a> square is another great spot to get an authentic Lisbon food experience. The neighborhood in which the square sits is a great place for sightseeing and is described as one of the most multicultural <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/what-to-do-in-lisbon-around-bairro-alto\/\">areas<\/a> in all of Lisbon!<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s1\">The Beaches in Lisbon<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Right at the mouth where the Tagus meets the sea do the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/best-beaches-in-lisbon\/\">beaches<\/a> of Lisbon start. This is my favorite <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/lisbon-in-one-day\/\">day trip<\/a> beach when in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top-5-streets-see-lisbon\/\">Lisbon<\/a>. The white sand and rolling hills are kind of a slice of heaven. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">If you\u2019re not impartial to a slightly further drive from Lisbon, then might I suggest making the trip to the 18km long beach that makes up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/things-to-do-in-lisbon-around-the-beach\/\">Tr\u00f3ia<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Words fail me with this piece of land. I\u2019ll leave it at that and to you to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top-5-recommendations-by-lisbon-locals\/\">visit<\/a> for yourself.
