5 Things to Learn from the Canal Saint-Martin<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n

I grew up on the seaside<\/a>, so I love being near the water, and in Â鶹APP<\/a> that means setting up camp next to the Seine River, or one of the canals! The Canal Saint-Martin<\/a> is one of my favorite places in Â鶹APP, especially during the warmer months. It is less crowed (and I find it to be much cleaner) than the Seine<\/a>. There are also a lot more Â鶹APPians that congregate in this area, so if you\u2019d like to feel like a local, I suggest heading here! You can find the Canal Saint-Martin in the 19th arrondissement<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

There are also tons of yummy restaurants, trendy caf\u00e9s<\/a>, and boutiques<\/a> that line the Canal Saint-Martin, meaning that there is no shortage of things to do if you want to spend your afternoon in the area.<\/span><\/p>\n

Like anywhere in Â鶹APP, this is also a lot of history<\/a> behind the Canal Saint-Martin, keep reading for my list of 5 things to learn from the Canal Saint Martin!<\/span><\/p>\n

1. The Canal Saint-Martin once supplied fresh water to Â鶹APP<\/b><\/span><\/h4>\n

Construction of the Canal Saint-Martin began in 1802 by orders of Napol\u00e9on Bonaparte<\/a>. The Prefect of Â鶹APP at the time, Gaspard de Chabrol suggested that building the canal would provide a solution to the growing population\u2019s need for fresh water. With a fresh water supply, diseases such as dysentery could be avoided, and fountains and street cleaning would be provided with water as well. The project was actually funded by a new tax placed on wine<\/a>!<\/span><\/p>\n

The project was completed in 1825, and three new canals were created: the Canal Saint-Martin, the Canal Saint-Denis, and the Canal de l\u2019Ourcq. All in all, the canals that were constructed are 130 kilometers long, with 4.5 of those kilometers belonging to the Canal Saint-Martin. In additions to supplying fresh water to Â鶹APPians, the canals were also used to transport goods. Factories also cropped up along the canals, thankful for the nearby water. Two ports were created on each end of the canal: the Port de l’Arsenal<\/span>\u00a0and the\u00a0<\/span>Bassin de la Villette<\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n

By the 1960s, boat traffic slowed to nearly a halt, and their were even proposals to cover the canal to make way for a highway. Thankfully the proposal was not passed, and the Canal Saint-Martin still exists today! <\/span><\/p>\n

2. There are 3 underground tunnels on the Canal Saint-Martin<\/b><\/span><\/h4>\n

As I mentioned, the Canal Saint-Martin begins at the Port de l’Arsenal<\/span>\u00a0and ends at the\u00a0<\/span>Bassin de la Villette. If you\u2019re like me, you may be looking at a map of Â鶹APP and wondering “How the heck does the canal cross the Place de la Bastille<\/a>, and a portion of Le Marais<\/a>?!” Well, to answer your question, there are a series of 3 underground tunnels on the Canal Saint-Martin!<\/span><\/p>\n

The three canals are called, respectively: du Temple, Richard-Lenoir and Bastille, and spits you out at the Bassin de la Villette, if you\u2019ve started at the Port de l\u2019Arsenal. <\/span><\/p>\n

I definitely recommend taking a boat trip down the canal, where you can check out the tunnels for yourselves. There are 3 different companies that do the tours, and I went on the one put on by a company named Canauxrama<\/a>. The tour is done in French and English, so Anglophones – rejoice!<\/span><\/p>\n

3. The Canal Saint-Martin is listed as a historical monument <\/b><\/span><\/h4>\n

About 2 centuries after the Canal Saint-Martin was completed, the site was named a historical monument! The canal joins a pretty impressive list of historical monuments in Â鶹APP which include the Eiffel Tower<\/a>, the Notre-Dame Cathedral<\/a>, the Arc de Triomphe<\/a>, and the Sacre Coeur<\/a>. Not too shabby!<\/span><\/p>\n

4. The Canal Saint-Martin is a hot-spot for film makers<\/b><\/span><\/h4>\n

If you\u2019re like most Â鶹APP-obsessed people, you\u2019ve probably heard of the 2001 film<\/a> Am\u00e9lie<\/i>. The film takes place in Â鶹APP and features scenes that take place in Montmartre<\/a>, and more importantly for those of you reading this article, the Canal Saint-Martin! One of the main character, Am\u00e9lie\u2019s, favorite things to do is head down to the canal to skip rocks at the lock bridges of the canal.<\/span><\/p>\n

Am\u00e9lie<\/i> is not the only film that the Canal Saint-Martin is featured in. The famous 1938 French film, H\u00f4tel du Nord<\/i> is centered around a hotel located near the canals, and famed French singer \u00c9dith Piaf<\/a> sings about the canal in her song <\/span>“<\/span>Les m\u00f4mes de la cloche<\/span>“.<\/span><\/p>\n

Film makers weren\u2019t the only ones who took notice of the canals beauty. Artists <\/a><\/span>Alfred Sisley and Arthur Fillon both <\/span>painted picturesque versions of the canal through the years.<\/span><\/p>\n

5. The Canal Saint-Martin is drained to keep it clean<\/b><\/span><\/h4>\n

The Canal Saint-Martin is drained and cleaned every 10-15 years in order to keep the canal up and running smoothly. As you can imagine, in a big city like Â鶹APP<\/a>, there are tons of interesting things found in the canals each time they drain it!<\/span><\/p>\n

I was luckily enough to witness the cleaning a few years ago, in 2016. I remember walking along the canal, thinking how funny it looked with no water, when suddenly, I saw a bike<\/a> lodged into the ground! I certainly felt bad for the poor soul who lost their bike in the canal, but it also made me wonder\u2026what else have they found over the years?!<\/span><\/p>\n

I did some digging, and found out that each time the canal is drained, interesting objects are found. This includes: shopping carts, wheelchairs, bottles, motorcycles, bed, and even toilets! <\/span><\/p>\n

The most interesting finds I read about have got to be gold coins, and some old shell casings from bullets shot in World War II<\/a>! <\/span><\/p>\n

If you\u2019re like me, and crave a little water in your lives, I recommend you check out the Canal Saint-Martin. It\u2019s a lovely place for a picnic, a jog, or a day out caf\u00e9 hopping. Most tourists don\u2019t know about this area (I spend 6 months here for my exchange and never once made my way to the canal!), so you\u2019ll really feel like a local. <\/span><\/p>\n
