Where to begin. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Whether you\u2019ve visited Â鶹APP before or will be touring it for the first time, it is likely that the district of Pigalle is already well on your radar. Pigalle is the infamous town that sits at the bottom of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/the-10-best-things-to-do-in-montmartre-with-kids\/\"><span class=\"s2\">Montmartre<\/span><\/a> hill, just between the 9th and 18th arrondissements. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It is widely known as being the neighborhood of sex and debauchery \u2014 and this description wouldn\u2019t be far off from the read thing. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">During the revolution in Â鶹APP, Pigalle became the area to which artists and socialites flocked. Â鶹APP is home to more than just the French <\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\">Something you\u2019ll pick up on the minute you arrive in Pigalle is that this is a place that many diverse cultures call home. Pigalle seems to be where many of the foreign entrepreneurs landed up when they ventured to Â鶹APP in search of creating a better life. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\">Many of the street side businesses are owned by everyone other than actual Â鶹APPians. Drop into one of the street vendor cafes and spend a few euros on a juicy falafel wrap drenched in fresh made hummus. The array of people that Pigalle draws in makes it the perfect place to sit and people watch as the day goes by. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\">The street side restaurants of Â鶹APP are the perfect place to do this. Particularly in the summer, I love watching Pigalle life go by from the cafe tables at Wall Street Pigalle. It\u2019s just past the Blanche <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/how-to-use-the-metro-in-paris\/\"><span class=\"s2\">metro<\/span><\/a> stop on the main road, Boulevard de Clichy. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\">Both their wine and tapas style snacks are the perfect pair to the chaos going on around the neighborhood. Stories like this Sudanese man\u2019s are not uncommon, and districts like Pigalle are where you\u2019ll find them hidden. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p8\"><span class=\"s1\">2. Life is to be enjoyed<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Not everyone is able to see the hidden charm of Piaglle, and that\u2019s okay. But there is one thing that is abundantly clear when roaming this district and that is that life is definitely intended to be enjoyed. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Pigalle is not technically a wealthy district by any means, not if you compare it to some of the other arrondissements. In Pigalle, people get by. They work hard and they party harder \u2014 this is the essence of the space. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Whatever your reason for being in Pigalle, whether you\u2019ve come in for a concert or you\u2019re taking a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/tour\/city\/paris-walking-tours\/\"><span class=\"s4\">free guided walking tour<\/span><\/a>, you\u2019ll enjoy the overwhelming sense of \u201canything goes\u201d at all times. To some this can be daunting, to others it\u2019s magic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">While much of Pigalle life centers around an honest days work, there is equally as much that revolves around the sensory overloading for the visitors coming in. On every corner there is a bar\u2026 or some sort of entertainment venue offering some sort of <i>entertaining<\/i> service. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">If its not a bar then its a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top-5-clubs-to-meet-parisians\/\"><span class=\"s2\">club<\/span><\/a>. If not a club then a theatre! Sometimes Â鶹APP has the tendency to take itself a little too seriously. Take your time to stroll<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Â鶹APP may be big, but it is not unreasonably to attempt to walk the city at every opportunity possible. Sometimes when traveling to a new land the beginning and end of neighborhoods can be a bit of a grey area. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Visiting a widespread place like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/the-best-way-to-visit-notre-dame-de-paris\/\"><span class=\"s2\">Notre Dame<\/span><\/a> is easier to comprehend when you understand that you need just remain in the 4th arrondissement in order to see it all. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In the same way, Pigalle is a district best explore by foot especially since it sits at the foot of Montmartre \u2014 which is a refreshing place to land up after a long day of Pigalle. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Pigalle demands time. There is simply way too much going on for you to rush through it, especially by car. The district reminds us to take our time, and take in our surroundings at a pace that is best suited to us. Beware the pickpocket!<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I wish I could say that this endemic is reserved to specific districts in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top-5-ethical-fashion-stores-in-paris\/\"><span class=\"s2\">Â鶹APP<\/span><\/a> but that simply wouldn\u2019t be true. The art of the pickpocket is something that resigns supreme through almost all the arrondissements. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Despite the illusion, Â鶹APP is nowhere near perfect economically. There are many residents of the city who live just over, or even under, the poverty line and life is anything but easy. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Â鶹APPian streets are also home to a large influx of refugees who have fled to the city over recent years in search of safety and solace. Naturally, poverty is an issue for them too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The one thing tourists bring is money, this will always be a very true reality. Whether you fall victim to one yourself while in Pigalle, or witness one a few meters in front of you \u2014 this is not something easy to avoid on the Â鶹APP streets. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The good news is that with a little awareness you can easily keep your possessions safe from theft. A few of the more obvious ways include: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Never, ever keeping a cellphone or wallet in the back pocket of your pants <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Always zip and latch a bag when it is not in use <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Try not have any loose valuables visible on your person <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Don\u2019t hold your purse under your upper arm and think it will be \u201csafer\u201d there (I learnt this one the heard way)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The pickpocket problem is no reason to avoid Pigalle by any means. With a bit of street smarts you\u2019ll be A-okay. Architecture can always be reused <\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Back in the day when brothels and cabarets ruled Pigalle the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top-5-fun-facts-about-parisian-architecture\/\"><span class=\"s2\">architecture<\/span><\/a> that came along with them was something extra to be marveled at. The high ceilings, ornate woodwork and baroque finishes stayed up even when the businesses of this time period came crashing down. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Pigalle was left with many abandoned buildings that once housed these very specific services. The building was once the location of a Belle-\u00c9poque brothel that saw thousands of visitors a week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It is now a five star hotel that\u2019s interior is as mind blowing as the history of the space itself. For a pretty fee, one of the old brothel rooms can be yours for the night \u2014 sans the scandal! <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Pigalle district is full of beautiful transformation sites just like this one. From once strip clubs to now theaters, once red light rooms to now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top-5-best-restaurants-in-le-marais\/\"><span class=\"s2\">falafel<\/span><\/a> restaurants \u2014 you\u2019ll quickly see how easily old architecture can be remolded into something equally as incredible. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Very few of the original buildings in Pigalle have been retouched or renovated far from their founding state. The only place that was redone was the Moulin Rouge on account of a fire that broke out and completely destroyed the original building.
