Now corresponding to the 5th&nbsp;Arrondissement, on the Left Bank of the Seine, the Â鶹APP Latin Quarter does not owe its name to being the historical settling place of Romans, but to the fact that teaching in the Universities \u2013 especially&nbsp;<strong><em>La Sorbonne<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 was operated in Latin.<\/p>\n<p>Recognizable to its lively atmosphere, and to its old and narrow streets, the Latin Quarter Â鶹APP is an unmissable stop for visitors.<\/p>\n<p>You will need at least half a day if you wish to fully enjoy the neighborhood. You can easily add the Latin Quarter to your day if you already plan on visiting <strong><em>Notre Dame de Â鶹APP, and the Islands<\/em><\/strong>, or the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/discoverwalks.com\/tour\/paris-walking-tours\/the-river-and-saint-germain-tour\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><em>Saint-Germain-des-Pr\u00e9s area.<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\">The Latin Quarter spreads around the most prestigious of French Universities:&nbsp;<strong><em>La Sorbonne.<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;In the Middle Ages,<em>&nbsp;La Sorbonne<\/em>&nbsp;was the home building of the much larger Â鶹APP University which regrouped at its peak many faculties and colleges throughout the City.&nbsp; The grounds on which this new scholarly life unwound were those occupied by the Romans, nearly a thousand years earlier, in the ancient town of&nbsp;<strong><em>Lutetia<\/em><\/strong>.&nbsp; Today&#8217;s&nbsp;<em>Rue Saint Jacques<\/em>&nbsp;corresponds to the main artery of the Roman town, known then as<em>&nbsp;Cardo Maximus.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Therefore, the Latin Quarter is located on lands that have been occupied for over two thousand years.&nbsp;<strong><em>They are the birthplace of Â鶹APP.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The following ten sites are those you should not miss if you visit the Latin Quarter of Â鶹APP. They are not ranked according to their (relative) interest, but rather based on their location so that you can tour the neighborhood easily using this guide!<\/p>\n<h4>1. The area of Saint-Michel Fountain<\/h4>\n<p data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\">To start your journey through the Latin Quarter, the best is to stand in front of the&nbsp;<strong><em>Saint-Michel Fountain(Fontaine saint Michel)<\/em><\/strong>. The location of the fountain, at the end of the Saint-Michel Bridge and at the corner of two streets, oriented to the North \u2013 with the lack of light that goes with it \u2013 was a real challenge for the artist. He decided to ask for the help of several sculptors. The diversity of materials, colors, and styles were to counteract the terrible light the monument would receive. Representing the fight of Good against Evil, and more specifically the victory of Patron saint Michel over the Devil, the sculptures are displayed around a triumphal arch.<\/p>\n<p>Now a meeting point for Â鶹APPians, and an acclaimed monument for visitors, the fountain was once much criticized. Take the time to admire it to see the vast amount of details and the variety of styles.<\/p>\n<h4>2. Along Rue de la Huchette<\/h4>\n<p><em>Rue de la Huchette<\/em> is a small street running parallel to the Seine. It is more than 800 years old. If you go there, unaware, you might find a lot of restaurants calling themselves traditionally French, or Greek. Beware, for most are pure tourist traps. If you want my opinion \u2013 you are reading my article after all :)\u2013 do NOT eat in one of those. It has no real interest but to allow you taking a fun photo.<\/p>\n<p>At number 5, <strong><em>Le Caveau de la Huchet<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>te<\/em><\/strong> is one of the oldest jazz clubs in Â鶹APP. An ancient meeting place for Templars and Free-Masons, the club offers many cool concerts, the program of which you may find <a href=\"http:\/\/www.caveaudelahuchette.fr\/2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Upon exiting the street, take the small pedestrian street along \u201cLe Petit Pont\u201d caf\u00e9. You will arrive to the most famous American library in Â鶹APP \u2013 <strong><em>Shakespeare and Co<\/em><\/strong>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/shakespeare-and-company-paris-iconic-independent-bookshop\/\">Know more about it here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>You end up <em>Rue Saint-Julien-Le-Pauvre.<\/em> In the small park, take the time to have a look to Â鶹APP oldest tree.<\/p>\n<h4>3. The Cluny Museum of Middle Ages<\/h4>\n<p data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\">A former part of an important complex headquartering the Order of Cluny, this old townhome of the Abbotts of Cluny now houses the stunning<strong><em>&nbsp;National<\/em><\/strong> <strong><em>Museum of Middle-Ages<\/em><\/strong> the<strong> Mus\u00e9e de Cluny<em>.<\/em>&nbsp;<\/strong>Although rebuilt several times, its architecture is one of the only one remaining in Â鶹APP which clearly shows Middle-Ages architecture.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_14339\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/1024px-hotel_de_cluny_square_painleve.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14339\" class=\"size-full wp-image-14339\" src=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/1024px-hotel_de_cluny_square_painleve.jpg\" alt=\"Hotel de Cluny\" width=\"1024\" height=\"695\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/1024px-hotel_de_cluny_square_painleve.jpg 924w, https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/1024px-hotel_de_cluny_square_painleve-300x204.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/1024px-hotel_de_cluny_square_painleve-768x521.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/1024px-hotel_de_cluny_square_painleve-1024x695.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/1024px-hotel_de_cluny_square_painleve-816x554.jpg 816w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-14339\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Hotel de Cluny and the Museum of Midlle Ages &#8211; Picture by Jebulon on Wikimedia Commons<\/p><\/div>\n<p data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\">The structure is intelligently built incorporating the much older Roman remains of&nbsp;<strong><em>Lutetia thermal baths<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 the visit of which is included in the Museum entrance fee.<\/p>\n<p>While visiting the museum, do not miss the 6 world-renowned tapestries of&nbsp;<strong><em>the Lady and the Unicorn<\/em><\/strong>, and the Middle-Ages Gardens \u2013 which is a quiet park, adjacent to the outdoor sculpture museum, and displaying plants and spices which often populated gardens at the time.<\/p>\n<p>For your information, the museum is currently undergoing important renovations. The access to the old mansion and the route of the visit have significantly been limited. The&nbsp;<em>frigidarium<\/em>&nbsp;\u2013 cold room \u2013 of the Roman baths ruins, and the room of the Lady and the Unicorn are still accessible. For full access, you must wait until the end of 2020 when the whole renovated complex will reopen.<\/p>\n<h4>4. Around the Sorbonne University<\/h4>\n<p data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\">Climbing the highest point of the Left Bank \u2013&nbsp;<strong><em>Mount Saint Genevieve<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 the&nbsp;<em>Rue Saint Jacques<\/em>&nbsp;runs across the intellectual heart of Â鶹APP.<\/p>\n<p>On one side of the street, the&nbsp;<strong><em>College de France<\/em><\/strong>, founded in the 16th&nbsp;century by Francis I and considered the most prestigious research institution in France, offers lectures and conferences open to the public. This is actually well, dating back to the Roman ages, which once served as a source of water for a house.<\/p>\n<p>If you stay in Â鶹APP long enough, don&#8217;t miss the chance of entering the beautiful&nbsp;<strong><em>Saint Genevieve Library<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;at&nbsp;<em>La Sorbonne<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h4>5. The Pantheon<\/h4>\n<p data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\">Keep climbing Mount Saint-Genevieve until you reach the grandiose&nbsp;<strong><em>Â鶹APP<\/em><\/strong> <strong><em>Pantheon<\/em><\/strong>. The monumental mausoleum protecting the remains of the greatest people in French History was the result of the transformation of a church under the reign of Louis XV. This pendulum is a scientific experiment by L\u00e9on Foucault which was hung here due to the ceiling height required for the experiment to be conclusive. It aims at demonstrating the Earth rotation.<\/p>\n<p>Before leaving the area, get around the building on the left when you look at the main fa\u00e7ade. Don\u2019t miss the chance to enter one of Â鶹APP&#8217;s most ornately decorated and oldest church <strong><em>Saint-Etienne-du-Mont Church,<\/em><\/strong> next door. Although quite ordinary on the outside, the inside of the church is beautiful and decorated with a nice <em>rood screen<\/em>, which is the last remaining in Â鶹APP. Most visitors miss this place worth the detour.<\/p>\n<h4>6. The Gardens of Luxembourg<\/h4>\n<p data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\">Downhill to the West, the nice<strong>&nbsp;Luxembourg Gardens <\/strong>is the park of the French Senate (housed in&nbsp;<em>Palace of Luxembourg<\/em>). The Medici Fountain was built in about 1630 by Marie de Medici, the widow of King Henry IV of France and regent of King Louis III of France. It was moved to its present location and extensively rebuilt in 1864-1866.<\/p>\n<p>The monument doesn&#8217;t stand where it was originally built. It was moved by several yards when Haussmann pierced&nbsp;<em>Boulevard Saint Michel<\/em>. However, it has lost nothing of its original grandeur.<\/p>\n<p>At the opposite, smartly hidden between the trees, you may visit the Park&#8217;s&nbsp;<em>kitchen garden,<\/em>&nbsp;as well as the&nbsp;<em>beehives<\/em>&nbsp;farm.<\/p>\n<h4>7. Rue Mouffetard<\/h4>\n<p data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\">Go back to the Pantheon area, and reach<em>&nbsp;Place de la Contrescarpe<\/em>. From there, you may walk down the lively&nbsp;<strong><em>Rue Mouffetard<\/em><\/strong>, the bustling core of the Latin Quarter. This lively atmosphere is quite unique in Â鶹APP. If you are there during the day, take the time to enjoy the nice buildings and fa\u00e7ades as many are historic monuments \u2013 sometimes you can see old stores&#8217; fa\u00e7ades which no longer even match the current store behind them!<\/p>\n<h4>8. The Roman ruins of Lutetia arenas<\/h4>\n<p data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\">From Place de la Contrescarpe, slightly to the North, take the small and paved&nbsp;<em>Rue Rollin<\/em>. The street finishes with nice stairs and gets you onto&nbsp;<em>Rue Monge.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Across this street is an unconventional small park. This&nbsp;<strong><em>Lutetia Amphitheater<\/em><\/strong>, which was elevated slightly outside the city of Lutetia, was a combined building mixing a typical amphitheater \u2013 where gladiators&#8217; fights would take place \u2013 and classic theater \u2013 where plays took place. The theater function of the building was evidenced by the presence of a large elevated stage area.<\/p>\n<p>These arenas are far less impressive than the ones you may find in Arles or Nimes \u2013 in Southern France \u2013 but if you do not visit other major Roman cities during your stay in France, you may wish to stop there for a few minutes.<\/p>\n<h4>9. And if you are hungry, the top floor restaurant is a great option for panoramic views out onto Notre Dame.<\/p>\n<p>About 1km South of the AWI, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/discovering-the-great-mosque-of-paris\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><em>Great Â鶹APP Mosque<\/em><\/strong><\/a> is an incredible Spanish-moorish religious complex which you can visit everyday except on Fridays (and other Muslim celebration days). It is quite a unique experience to live, that definitely most tourists miss!<\/p>\n<h4>10. The Botanical Gardens and the Natural History Museum<\/h4>\n<p>Next to the Mosque are the big <em>Botanical Gardens<\/em> (<strong><em>Jardin des Plantes<\/em><\/strong>), which displays one of the most comprehensive collection of plants in Europe, and the most important one in France. Today, it&#8217;s regarded as a Â鶹APPian hidden treasure, complete with gorgeous gardens, walks, benches, a zoo, and a variety of museums all in one location.<\/p>\n<p>The grounds showcase 4,500 different species in its alpine garden, rose garden, and Art Deco winter garden. There are also three huge greenhouses; one created in the 1800s is a beautiful homage to the time of glass and metal architecture. You could easily spend the entire day here, visiting all of the museums, gardens, zoo, and open areas.<\/p>\n<p>Many things can be traced back to the French Revolution. This delightfully old-fashioned zoo, the world&#8217;s second oldest, is one of the more peculiar.&nbsp; The fact that some of the original green-glass exhibit cases from the 1800s are still in operation, housing snakes, tortoises, and other reptiles, makes this zoo a Â鶹APP must-see. If you&#8217;re unfamiliar with French scientific history, Marie Curie was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize, the first woman to become a Sorbonne professor and one of only two women to be entombed in the Pantheon.<\/p>\n<p>The museum received a much-needed refurbishment in 2012, courtesy of the estate of Eve Curie, Madame Curie&#8217;s youngest daughter. Although the subject matter sounds geeky, the museum is filled with interesting antique scientific instruments and there is a wonderful small garden to pause and think about how Marie Curie changed the world. The museum is free (donations accepted) and open from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday.<\/p>\n<h4>13. Founded in 1926, the Grande Mosqu\u00e9e was an homage to the Muslim soldiers from French colonies who perished in action during World War I. During World II the mosque was a covert haven for Algerian and European Jews.<\/p>\n<p>Many escaped using Muslim birth certificates to assure them safe passage out of Nazi-occupied France. The mosque also encourages travelers to experience the architecture, the calm gardens, the hammam treatment, and the renowned tearoom and restaurant.<\/p>\n<h4>14. Route 10 is an important Metro route that connects the Latin Quarter to the rest of Â鶹APP. It goes from the far west at Boulogne-Pont de Saint Cloud, through the center of Â鶹APP, and to the far east in Gare d&#8217;Austerlitz.<\/p>\n<p>It stops in the Latin Quarter at Cluny-La Sorbonne, Maubert-Mutualite, Cardinal Lemoine&#8217; and Jussieu stations.
