They were the first to recognize clothing as a business, and have been exporting their products since the 17th century. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">The entire reason why I came to France for the first time was as a fashion student. When I approached my advisor to tell him that I was interested in studying abroad, he told me that Â鶹APP would be my best choice. He\u2019s the one with the nickname the Sun King, he moved the French court to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/tour\/city\/versailles-walking-tours\/?utm_source=Blog&amp;utm_campaign=Blog&amp;utm_content=french%20fashion%20in%20paris%20%2F%20versailles%20tour\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Â鶹APP<\/a>, and he is one of the major reasons why French royalty is known for it\u2019s opulence and excessiveness. If you\u2019ve ever checked out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/things-to-do-in-versailles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Â鶹APP<\/a>, you know what I mean by that! I love visiting this castle and seeing how over the top it is. These fashion pictures were distributed throughout the French court, and to other places in France and around the world. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">In addition to this, King Louis was a bit of a control freak, so he deemed that the textile trade of France be under the control of the royal court. Another way King Louis showed off his style was through the elaborate costumes he would wear when he got his royal portrait painted!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Have you ever looked at a painting from this time in French history and thought &#8220;man, thats some crazy hair!&#8221; you can thank King Louis for this too. His obsession with elaborate wigs even created a black market for human hair. If you\u2019re cringing at this, I\u2019m right there with you.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Marie-Antoinette: French fashion icon<\/b><\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">After King Louis XIV, comes his son, King Louis XVI and his wife, Queen Marie-Antoinette. Before this pair was known for going to the guillotine during the French Revolution, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top-10-fun-facts-marie-antoinette\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marie-Antoinette<\/a> was infamous for her sense of style! The costume designs are impressive and historically accurate, so you can get an idea of what style was like at this time in the French courts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Marie-Antoinette popularized sky-high wigs, putting feathers in her hair, and custom made dressed by designer Rose Bertin. The Incredibles were the name for the men of the group, and the Marvellous were the women. This group of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/how-to-look-parisian\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Â鶹APPians<\/a> emerged after the French Revolution and the Reign of Terror with a want and need to cut loose and take fashion a little less seriously than their predecessors of the French court. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Their style consisted of styles that resembled Greek or Roman tunics, and were made of linen and gauze, and they wore sandals to match. They wore wigs with hair dyed green, clue, purple, and pink, and were generally known to dress as sillily as they acted. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">After the bloody French Revolution, who can blame them?! The group scandalized Â鶹APP at the time, but that was all apart of their image and charm. Finally, in the late 19th century, it made a come back. This is actually thanks to an Englishman named Charles Frederick Worth, who founded The House of Worth, the first modern couturier house in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/paris-in-a-day\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Â鶹APP<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">With the emergence of The House of Worth, many other French fashion houses got their start. Famous designers of the time included Jeanne Paquin, Paul Poiret, and the House of Patou.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"> It is thanks to these artists that the term fashion designer exists today! <i>Haute Couture<\/i> was (and still is!) special, as each piece was custom and made to order specifically for the lucky person who worked with the designers to make a piece that was perfect for them, and them only. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>The first fashion shows<\/b><\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">It is also thanks to The House of Worth that fashion shows began. Worth would create a portfolio of designs that he was hoping to sell. He would then produce the designs, and put them on live models to be displayed in his showroom so that his clients would pick and choose which designs they were interested in having. The fashion show is born! <\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Coco Chanel and Vogue<\/b><\/span><\/h4>\n<div id=\"attachment_14254\" style=\"width: 254px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/chanel.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14254\" class=\" wp-image-14254\" src=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/chanel.jpeg\" alt=\"Coco Chanel\" width=\"244\" height=\"289\"><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-14254\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Coco Chanel &#8211; WikiCommons<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">The fashion magazine giant <i>Vogue <\/i>was published in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/paris-in-two-days\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Â鶹APP<\/a> for the first time in 1920, and not far behind, in 1925, designer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top-5-fun-facts-about-coco-chanel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Coco Chanel<\/a> debuted her first collection. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Chanel\u2019s boyish, simple, and elegant designs were embraced in contrast to the usual designs meant for full-figured women. Chanel reigns to this day as a major player in the luxury fashion world. It should come as no surprise that it got its start in Â鶹APP, where innovations were always accepted. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Post War Fashion in Â鶹APP<\/b><\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">The start of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/world-war-ii-paris\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">World War II<\/a> in Â鶹APP meant that fashion was put on hold, understandably so. Many designers were forced to close their fashion houses, and because of rationing on fabric and general disorder throughout Europe, not that many new styles or designs emerged.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_14255\" style=\"width: 586px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/576px-christian_dior_dress.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14255\" class=\"size-full wp-image-14255\" src=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/576px-christian_dior_dress.jpg\" alt=\"Christian Dior dress\" width=\"576\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/576px-christian_dior_dress.jpg 576w, https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/576px-christian_dior_dress-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 576px) 100vw, 576px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-14255\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Christian Dior dress &#8211; WikiCommons<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Fast forward to 1947, where new designer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top-5-fun-facts-about-dior\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Christian Dior<\/a> presents his now famous &#8220;New Look&#8221; designs. The New Look included a collection of dresses with very small waists and full skirts. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">After the horrors of WWII, women were ready to treat themselves to the luxuries of fancy fabrics and elegant designs. Chanel makes her comeback, and fashion houses such as Pierre Balmain<\/span><span class=\"s2\">&nbsp;and&nbsp;<\/span><span class=\"s1\">Hubert de Givenchy emerge in the 1950s. The French fashion magazine <i>Elle<\/i> is also published for the first time. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>The 1960s and ready-to-wear fashion<\/b><\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Up until the 1960s, fashion was very standardized. This means that almost everyone was wearing the same styles all of the time, and unless you were very wealthy, you probably only had between 2-3 outfits to choose between.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">This all changed in the 1960s with the introduction of <i>pr\u00eat-\u00e0-porter<\/i><\/span><span class=\"s2\">&nbsp;(ready-to-wear in French). Clothing began to be mass manufactured and in turn was more affordable. Â鶹APPian designer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top-5-fun-facts-yves-saint-laurent\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Yves Saint Laurent<\/a> is credited with starting this change!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The 1960s also saw the rise of Â鶹APPian style icons like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top-10-french-actresses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brigitte Bardot<\/a>, Fran\u00e7oise Hardy, and Jane Birkin. From then on, inventive designs did not stop being pumped out of Â鶹APP, solidifying it\u2019s place as the fashion capital of the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p8\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Fashion in Â鶹APP today<\/b><\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s1\">Almost all of the most famous French fashion houses have their headquarters in Â鶹APP, and the city is home to Â鶹APP Fashion Week, a biannual week long event featuring fashion shows from French and international designers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">In addition to that, Â鶹APP is home to the famous <\/span><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/things-to-do-near-champs-elysees\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Avenue des Champs-\u00c9lys\u00e9es<\/a>, a street which is known for it\u2019s designer and luxury shopping. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top-10-fashion-stores-in-le-marais\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Le Marais<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/best-things-to-do-in-paris-third-district\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">3rd<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/best-things-to-do-in-paris-fourth-district\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">4th arrondissements<\/a> is also famous for it\u2019s shopping, designer and vintage alike.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Conclusion <\/b><\/span><b> <\/b><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s1\">I hope you all have enjoyed my brief history of fashion in Â鶹APP.
