I know that when I first arrived in this city 7 years ago, it was one of the first museums I checked out. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">You can find masterpieces such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/the-best-way-to-see-mona-lisa-at-the-louvre\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mona Lisa<\/a>, the Venus de Milo, the Winged Victory of Samothrace, Liberty Leading the People, and Psyche Revived by Cupid&#8217;s Kiss\u2026just to name a few! That being said, construction of the Louvre started in 1202, so you can guess that it wasn\u2019t always home to the thousands of beautiful pieces of art and artefacts it holds today! So, just what <em>was<\/em> the structure before it became one of the most famous museums in the world?<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>The Louvre Fortress<\/b><\/span><\/h4>\n<div id=\"attachment_13800\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/optimized-louvre_chateau_1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13800\" class=\"size-full wp-image-13800\" src=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/optimized-louvre_chateau_1.jpg\" alt=\"The Louvre during Philippe-Auguste's reign\" width=\"640\" height=\"417\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/optimized-louvre_chateau_1.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/optimized-louvre_chateau_1-300x195.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-13800\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Louvre during Philippe-Auguste&#8217;s reign &#8211; WikiCommons<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">In the early 13th century, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/10-famous-french-kings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">French king<\/a> Philippe-Auguste recognized the need to protect his capital city of Âé¶¹APP from outside forces. With a wall already constructed around the city, the fortress he built was an extra precaution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">The original structure was a square, and the archeological findings of this original structure can be seen today in the Medieval Louvre exhibit in the museum. Between 1364 and 1380, the king, his architects and his builders converted the military complex into a series of apartments, salons, and a massive library whose works would eventually evolve into the National Library of France. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Unfortunately for king Charles V, the Hundred Years War began and the nobles no longer felt safe in Âé¶¹APP. The court moved to the suburbs of Âé¶¹APP, and set up house in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/5-reasons-to-visit-the-chateau-de-fontainebleau\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chateau de Fontainebleau<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Flash forward a few hundred years, and enter King Fran\u00e7ois I. The king wanted to move back into Âé¶¹APP, but decided that the palace that king Charles V began wasn\u2019t up to par with his standards of living. He order the original Louvre palace to be destroyed, and the reconstruction that began at this time resembles the Louvre that we recognize in our days! <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Side note: it was king Fran\u00e7ois I that brought Leonardo <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/da-vinci-code-and-paris\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Da Vinci<\/a> to France (where he spent his last days), and it is in this way that France came into possession of the Mona Lisa! After his death, the king\u2019s son, King Henri II continued to renovate and add onto the castle that his father began. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/ten-famous-french-queens\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">queen of France<\/a>, Catherine de Medici (who came from a famous Italian family known for its support and patronage to the arts), added onto the design with her idea for the construction of the Tuileries Palace. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Next up is King Henri IV, who removed older parts of the palace that remained from the fortress, and added on wings that connected the Louvre Palace with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/luxembourg-vs-tuileries-which-garden-to-choose\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tuileries<\/a> Palace, called the <em>Grand Galerie<\/em>. The nobility lived in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/things-to-do-in-versailles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Âé¶¹APP<\/a> until the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top-5-fun-facts-about-the-french-revolution\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">French Revolution<\/a>, and I\u2019m sure that quite a few of you know how that story ends!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">While the king and his court were making things happen in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/recommends\/versailles-tiqets-all-access\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Âé¶¹APP<\/a>, intellectuals and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top-5-artists-who-lived-in-paris\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">artists<\/a> who were living back in Âé¶¹APP at the Louvre Palace suggested that the French court create a museum dedicated to the king in the Louvre. This was just the beginning of the creation of the Louvre museum! <\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>The Louvre Palace turned museum<\/b><\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">The museum began with a very small collection of the king&#8217;s most prized artworks, and was opened to a select few from the public on certain days of the week. President Mitterrand removed the offices of a division of the government from within the museum, which freed up more space to display art. Mitterrand is also responsible for commissioning the infamous glass pyramid located in front of the museum. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top-5-fun-facts-about-parisian-architecture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Architect<\/a> I. M. How many hours can you spend inside?!
