There are over one hundred to visit, meaning there is really something for everyone!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">You may be scratching your heads and asking yourselves\u2026&#8221;Why in the world would I want to visit a sewer museum?!&#8221; But trust me! With the help of architect <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/10-interesting-things-you-didnt-know-about-french-history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Baron Haussmann<\/a>, Bonaparte, in addition to modernizing the sewer system, completely redesigned the city, and changed its narrow cobblestoned streets to the grand boulevards we know today. So, how did Âé¶¹APPians dispose of their waste before? <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">In the beginning of the 13th century, French King Philippe Auguste ordered that the street of Âé¶¹APP be paved, and that drains be introduced. Like any <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/tour\/city\/london-walking-tours\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">major city<\/a>, Âé¶¹APP had a problem properly disposing of their waste, meaning most of the by-products to be dumped into the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/how-to-enjoy-the-river-seine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Seine River<\/a>, or in the streets.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_13685\" style=\"width: 643px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13685\" class=\"wp-image-13685 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/charles_marville_la_bievre_ca._1865.jpg\" alt=\"Charles Marville, La Bi\u00e8vre\" width=\"633\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/charles_marville_la_bievre_ca._1865.jpg 633w, https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/charles_marville_la_bievre_ca._1865-300x227.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 633px) 100vw, 633px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-13685\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Waste system for twenty-four tanneries, twenty-one leather factories, nine starch and three dye manufacturers, a paper mill, two cotton and two flour mills, four laundries, a soap and candle factory, and assorted other industries in Âé¶¹APP called La Bi\u00e8vre in 1865 by Charles Marville &#8211; WikiCommons<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">It\u2019s hard to imagine the beautiful city we know and love today riddled with human waste and (really) stinky smells, but believe me\u2026I don\u2019t think any of us would have liked to live in Âé¶¹APP from the medieval times up until the 18th century! <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top-5-french-writers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Author Victor Hugo<\/a> immortalised these horrible conditions in his novel <i>Les Mis\u00e9rables.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Thankfully Haussmann and Bonaparte intervened, as with the introduction of the modern sewer system, disease and mortality rates fell, and life in Âé¶¹APP became more bearable, and began to resemble the city I am lucky enough to call home! <\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>The opening of the Sewer Museum<\/b><\/span><\/h4>\n<div id=\"attachment_13686\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13686\" class=\"wp-image-13686 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/640px-worldfair1867.jpg\" alt=\"World Fair 1867\" width=\"640\" height=\"248\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/640px-worldfair1867.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/640px-worldfair1867-300x116.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-13686\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The 1867 World&#8217;s Fair where the sewer system was first opened to the public by Le Monde Illustre &#8211; WikiCommons<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Like so many things in the Âé¶¹APP (the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/a-brief-history-of-the-eiffel-tower\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Eiffel Tower<\/a>, the Grand Palais and Petit Palais, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top-5-bridges-in-paris\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pont Alexandre III<\/a>), the first time the sewers were opened to the public was during a World\u2019s Fair. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Âé¶¹APPians seem to have always been fascinated by the bizarre (ever taken a trip to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/how-to-visit-the-paris-catacombs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Catacombs<\/a>, or the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/facts-about-paris-pere-lachaise-cemetery\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">P\u00e8re Lachaise<\/a> cemetery?!), so it should come as no surprise that the Âé¶¹APP Sewer Museum opened as early as 1889.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">In the early days of the museum, visitors were transported through the sewers with carts and a system of walkways. When you enter, you\u2019ll find yourself in a large room that runs beneath the Quai d\u2019Orsay. In this room, there are pipes and you\u2019ll learn that this used to be the main sewer line between the Place de La Concorde and the Pont de l\u2019Alma. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">There are pictures and old machines that were once used to operate the waste management system, and you\u2019ll also see the massive metal balls that are rolled through the sewers in order to clean them. Numerous strange objects have been found in the waters over the years, and are shown on display.
