As well as being a popular tourist destination and impressive display of exotic grandeur, the Mosque also houses an Islamic library, a prayer room, a conference room and 3,500 metres squared of oriental garden.<\/p>\n<h4>A Unique History of the Mosque<\/h4>\n<p>La grande mosqu\u00e9e de Â鶹APP, is the oldest mosque in mainland France. The Mosque was inaugurated in the interwar years in the 1920\u2019s. Founded by Si Kaddour Benghabrit, an impressive figure, who served as a state worker or fonctionnaire at the Quai d\u2019Orsay.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13650\" src=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/mosquearticle3.jpg\" alt=\"Portrait\" width=\"769\" height=\"952\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/mosquearticle3.jpg 769w, https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/mosquearticle3-242x300.jpg 242w, https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/mosquearticle3-768x951.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 769px) 100vw, 769px\" \/><em>Wiki Commons<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Hailing from Algeria, Benghabrit started a judiciary career in Algeria before working in French foreign affairs. A devout Muslim, his vocation to construct a Mosque on French soil was in part to symoblise an eternal friendship between France and Islam, whilst also paying homage to the thousands of Muslim soldiers who died fighting for France in the first world war.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps one of the most moving and little known stories from his background is how he saved many European and Algerian Jews living in Â鶹APP during the Second World War. Due to the Nazi occupation of France they were in grave danger of deportation. Similarly, but revisited in a semi-fictional way the plot of Ismael Ferroukhi\u2019s 2010 film \u2018Les homes libres\u2019 also covers this fascinating story.<\/p>\n<h4>Visit the Mosque<\/h4>\n<p>The Great Mosque of Â鶹APP welcomes visitors to discover its treasures and history daily at 9am, noon, 2pm and 6pm (excluding Fridays and on sacred religious days). Making a point of welcoming guests with particular attention, respect and courtesy, entry will cost you just \u20ac3, (2\u20ac for children students and groups of ten people or more).<\/p>\n<p>The majority of visits take place without a guide, but Francophone guides are available on request.<\/p>\n<h4>The Gardens of the Mosque<\/h4>\n<p>Here are some pictures of the gardens on a summer\u2019s day. Â鶹APPians and tourists alike are amazed at how completely \u201cd\u00e9paysant\u201d the unfamiliar and exotic experience is. Take your time to enjoy the sumptuous gardens, bring your sunglasses a book and maybe a camera.<\/p>\n<h4>Architecture<\/h4>\n<p>The Great Mosque of Â鶹APP is inspired by Spanish-Moorish styles of architecture. It was actually modeled on an existing Mosque in Fez (the el-Qaraouiyy\u00een Mosque). Its architecture is unique in Â鶹APP. It also reminds me of the Alcazar in Seville, similarly grand with intricate paneling and mosaics.<\/p>\n<p>For all intricate and decorative features, experienced and specialised artisans from North Africa were commissioned to work with traditional materials, to achieve the desired effect.<\/p>\n<p><em><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13654\" src=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/mosquearticle6.jpg\" alt=\"Batiment\" width=\"515\" height=\"924\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/mosquearticle6.jpg 515w, https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/mosquearticle6-167x300.jpg 167w, https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/mosquearticle6-768x1377.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/mosquearticle6-571x1024.jpg 571w, https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/mosquearticle6-816x1464.jpg 816w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 515px) 100vw, 515px\" \/><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Pixabay<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Mosque\u2019s minaret measures 33 metres tall. It was inspired by the Zitouna Mosquein Tunisia. Marshall Lyautey inaugurated its construction in 1922, claiming that the minaret would soar into the sky of \u00cele-de-France as one more prayer alongside all the other Catholic towers, such as Notre Dame, but they would feel no jealousy towards it.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13656\" src=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/mosquearticle7.jpg\" alt=\"Mosaic\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1440\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/mosquearticle7.jpg 924w, https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/mosquearticle7-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/mosquearticle7-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/mosquearticle7-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/mosquearticle7-816x612.jpg 816w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\" \/><br \/>\n<em>Pixabay<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The tiles are incredibly aesthetically pleasing and seem to have made the leap from adorning la grande Mosqu\u00e9e to popping up in French interiors magazines.<\/p>\n<h4>The Caf\u00e9 in the Mosque<\/h4>\n<p>The caf\u00e9 is the ideal spot for quiet reflection. If the French fl\u00e2neur, their oriental cousins from their former North African colonies share a talent for the slow life. The day is punctuated by the call to prayer (le muezzin) and moments of rest. This pleasant rhythm can be felt here.<\/p>\n<p>Pretty much the only beverage ever ordered in le caf\u00e9 de la Mosqu\u00e9e de Â鶹APP, is an incredibly sweet mint tea. If you have a sweet tooth you\u2019ll love it, if not it\u2019s still nice for the sake of tradition and to warm up your hands if you\u2019re en terrasse enjoying some fresh air in the colder months.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13661\" src=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/mint-tea.jpg\" alt=\"Mint Tea\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/mint-tea.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/mint-tea-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><em>Wiki Commons<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Since this is what pretty much everyone orders, there is a waiter who circuits round with a copper tray and a few crystal-style glasses of the piping hot infusion.<\/p>\n<p>Setting it down on the mosaic circular tables you\u2019ll want to be careful as the pretty trestle tables and paving aren\u2019t 100% stable. It is a single sex hammam and reserved for women from the age of 12 up.
