Built in a former train station, Orsay is now considered a favourite among visitors.

Famous for its very rich impressionist and post-impressionist collections, and bathed in the smooth sunlight that passes through the glass vaulted-ceiling, the Orsay Museum offers travelers a once-in-a-lifetime experience of admiring world renowned works of art by the most acclaimed European masters.

Rising five stories above the ground, and despite a much simpler and smaller layout than the Louvre, Orsay is one of the richest museums in France. Filled with 80,000 works of art (did anyone say the Louvre has 685,000?!), the museum has the most famous ones from Van Gogh, Degas, Renoir, Manet and Monet. Therefore, it is quite hard to select only a few masterpieces and recommend them for you to see.

However, I managed to pick the top 15 iconic Musée d’Orsay artworks that you should absolutely admire during your visit. This was one of the most important guinguette of Montmartre held in the yard of a wooden windmill. You may still enjoy a meal and admire the windmill in Rue Lepic, on the slopes of the actual Montmartre hill.

The restaurant is now a bit classier than the former guinguette today. But I personally enjoy the typical Montmartre feel that emanates from this windmill and it’s less tacky than the Moulin Rouge.

Entirely painted on location despite its big size, the painting includes several of Renoir’s friends among the crowd enjoying themselves at a typical Montmartre guinguette. Trying to capture movements and impressions, the Bal du Moulin de la Galette is one of the most representative artwork of early Impressionism.

The painting is firmly anchored across the upper-right to lower-left diagonal that separates the foreground and the background, thus giving a feeling of depth that well complements the sense of movement, amplified by blurry contours.

Often tagged the “Painter of Happiness”, Renoir typically renders happy and worriless moments of joy, which is representative of late-19th century Belle Epoque.

You cannot miss this one in the temple of Impressionism that Orsay is! His garden was an infinite inspiration to him, and the Nymphéas series is probably his most iconic creation. Today, they are shown all over the world, though the Nyphéas Bleus is one of the Musée d’Orsays’ more famous highlights.

Painted during World War I, these Blue Water Lilies are not the most representative of the series. The section Monet chose does not allow the viewer to have any point of reference as you can’t see the shore or the sky. The massive dominance of blues and greens almost gives the impression of looking at an abstract piece of art, if seen from too close. Significantly less precise than some other paintings from the Nymphéas series, this one is definitely one of a kind and a must-see!

You may also visit the Giverny house and Garden. Undoubtedly this is one major painting in the history of Impressionism and probably Manet’s most renowned one! It is a vivid depiction of how Manet did not want follow classical rules in his paintings.

Inspired by a painting by Titian (Pastoral Concert, you may see it at the Louvre, if you wish), but twisting it by removing any allegorical feel and by clearly setting the scene in his own time (as seen from the clothes), Manet painted here an extremely controversial work. For instance, the presence of a nude woman in the company of two dressed gentlemen, with no allegorical or mythological reason, sparked the most outraged reactions.

This painting was first exhibited at the alternative Salon des Refusés (salon of the rejected). And it sparkled a lot of controversy when it was first exposed.

In appearance, the scene is quite trivial. We see a simple burial. But placed back in the early 19th century context, it was really uncommon for a painting this size to depict common people. Usually, very large paintings were reserved for historical, religious or noble depictions. Here, Courbet breaks the rules and depicts a common scene, not idealized, for a wall-size canvas.

It was also pointed that the people were in the center and emphasized heavily, while members of the clergy were on the left side. At first, the painting was sometimes thought to be anticlerical. However, it is now commonly considered to be depicting the strive to live together despite differences, in a sad and common moment like this burial. In post-revolutionary France, co-existing despite the role of classes was an everyday struggle.

Read also; The best way to visit the Orsay Museum

9. It was a picture that sparked debate at the time since what Manet represented was not a mythological, and hence accepted, nude female figure, but the naked female figure of a prostitute with many provocative things hinting to this.

Edouard Manet’s Olympia became a pivotal artwork of the nineteenth century. It defied artistic conventions by depicting subject matter and style in novel ways. Until then, conservative classical conventions governed art, but a Modern age began, coinciding with the beginning of the Industrial Revolution in the 18th century.

Manet’s unique avant-garde approach influenced artists to follow their own style rather than academic art standards. Despite the rejection and contempt he received for his provocative paintings, Manet apparently maintained his ambition of showing with the Salon. The artist originally noticed them from the terrace of St Thomas Hospital on the opposite bank, near Westminster Bridge. Monet’s London work, which includes views of Charing Cross and Waterloo Bridges, is dominated by fluctuations in light and atmosphere caused by the famed London fog, which engulfed the city, particularly in autumn and winter.

Like an apparition, the surreal ghostly outline of Parliament buildings rises up. The stone architecture appears to have lost its meaning. The sky and sea are painted in the same tones, with mauve and orange dominating. To depict the density of the atmosphere and mist, the brushstrokes are deliberately broken into thousands of colored patches.

These impalpable parts, paradoxically, become more real than the evanescent edifice, which appears to disappear in the darkness. Monet’s art can be found in numerous museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Musée de l’Orangerie, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
