The country is literally crawling with castles. If you are a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/10-interesting-things-you-didnt-know-about-french-history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">history<\/a> buff like me, you know that this means paradise. There\u2019s so much to see\u2026and to learn! The commune of Fontainebleau is located about an hour outside of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/tour\/city\/paris-walking-tours\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Â鶹APP<\/a> to the southeast, and is very easily reachable by train. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">If you\u2019re a France veteran, you\u2019ve probably visited the Louvre, Â鶹APP, or maybe the castles in the Loire Valley. You may have never even heard of the Ch\u00e2teau de Fontainebleau. Well, I suggest you pull out your maps and get planning, as this Ch\u00e2teau is really something to be seen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">The Ch\u00e2teau de Fontainebleau is a museum and <\/span><span class=\"s1\">a\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s2\">UNESCO World Heritage Site<\/span><span class=\"s1\">, and justly, as it predates the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/how-to-enjoy-your-louvre-museum-tour\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Louvre<\/a> by 50 years, and Â鶹APP by 5 centuries. French royal families such as Cap\u00e9tiens, Valois, Bourbons, Bonaparte and Orl\u00e9ans have all resided within its walls, and it is the only royal castle in France to have been steadily lived in for eight centuries straight. So why isn\u2019t it as famous as it\u2019s other ch\u00e2teau counterparts?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">It could be because although the castles was always inhabited, it was only for a few months out of the year, as the ch\u00e2teau is what one could call a glorified hunting lodge. The forest of Fontainebleau is the second largest national forest in France, perfect for all of those <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/10-famous-french-kings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">French kings<\/a> who enjoyed hunting. But, when I say glorified, I mean glorified, as after the coming and going of so many kings and their courts, the &#8220;lodge&#8221; has become a royal palace in it\u2019s own right!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">It remains a mystery as to why the Ch\u00e2teau de Fontainebleau has remained in the background as far as famous French castles go, but do yourself a favor and take a visit. I remember warning him that there may be a long line to enter the castle &#8211; but I swore that once we entered, I knew it would be worth the wait! <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Low and behold, when we arrived, we waited in line for about 10 minutes, and found that we practically had the place all to ourselves! If you\u2019ve ever visited <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/tour\/city\/versailles-walking-tours\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Â鶹APP<\/a>, you know that that is a big change from the throngs of people, notably in the King and Queens bedrooms. This was one time I was really happy to be wrong, and it was a great way to spend a wintery and rainy Sunday.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>2. Of course, it was completely at the expense of her poor citizens! <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">That being said, her chambers at Â鶹APP, and her Petit Trianon are works of art, and she wasn\u2019t skimping on her digs at the Ch\u00e2teau de Fontainebleau either. When I entered this section of the castle, I was taken aback by the luscious fabrics and touches of the exoticism decor that was so popular at the time. This is just one of the two boudoir\u2019s that King Louis XVI had commissioned for his wife. Knowing the history of their essentially loveless marriage, I wonder if this was Louis\u2019 way of trying to win over the queen?!<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>3. Inside the chateau there are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/paris-museums-tips\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">museum<\/a> spaces dedicated to: The Empress\u2019 Chinese Museum, The Napoleon I Museum, The Galerie de Peinture (Paintings Gallery), and The Furniture Gallery. <\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li5\"><span class=\"s3\">The Empress\u2019 Chinese Museum is dedicated to Empress Eugenie\u2019s passion for everything that is Far-East. Although many of these treasured came in Eugenie\u2019s possession for some less than savory reasons (her husband, Napoleon was known for ransacking Chinese palaces in the Napoleonic wars), others are diplomatic gifts that have since been donated.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li5\"><span class=\"s3\">The Napoleon I Museum is located in the former apartments of the French ruler. If you want to learn more about Napoleon as a leader in France, this is the museum for you.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li5\"><span class=\"s3\">The Paintings Gallery truly feels like an actual separate museum within the castles walls. Much more opulent than the set up in say, the Louvre, you can really feel like you\u2019re walking in the footsteps of all of the royals that once called this castle home.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li5\"><span class=\"s3\">The Furniture Gallery shows off different collections of furniture that was placed in the chateau throughout the ages.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>4. I know that when I visited, heading outside was one of my favorite parts. Don\u2019t get me wrong &#8211; the opulence inside is beautiful, but I\u2019m a nature lover at heart. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">There is an English <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top-10-best-parks-and-gardens-in-paris\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">garden<\/a>, the queen\u2019s private garden, a lakeside pavilion, to name a few of the outdoor places just ready to be wandered through. Not to mention the <i>massive<\/i> park 130 hectares large whose creation dates back to the 17th century. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">All of this does not include the Fontainebleau forest! As I said, if you take an entire day out to explore the green spaces, you won\u2019t regret it!<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>5. The Chapel of the Trinity, The chapelle basse Saint-Saturnin, and The chapelle haute Saint-Saturnin are the names of the 3 sanctuaries inside the Ch\u00e2teau de Fontainebleau. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">A bonus for music lovers &#8211; Lana del Rey\u2019s famous music video for her song <i>Born to Die<\/i> was filmed in the Chapel of the Trinity.
