Black smoke and tear gas billowed up from the ignited barricades that blocked Â鶹APP&#8217;s largest boulevard, bringing traffic to a standstill. As a foreigner, I am wary of interfering in the politics of other countries and, therefore, I spent my time milling about the outskirts of the demonstration, watching from the sidelines.<\/p>\n<p>It proved lucky, because, soon after my arrival, riot police (trained specifically for this purpose) began to swarm the boulevard, armed with batons, teargas and water cannons, clashing with protesters in what has been called the some of the most violent demonstrations in Â鶹APP for decades.<\/p>\n<h4>The long history of civil unrest in France<\/h4>\n<p>Strikes and demonstration have always been prevalent in french culture. Since the french revolution, which primarily started as a mass demonstration against the high tax on salt, the French have always used protests and street movement as one of the main ways in which they express their political opinion.<\/p>\n<p>After the overturning of the<i>\u00a0Le Chapelier Law<\/i>\u00a0in 1791, unions have also handed mass support to strikes and demonstrations.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13263\" src=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/paris_may1_2002_dcp_8570.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/paris_may1_2002_dcp_8570.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/paris_may1_2002_dcp_8570-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><em>French flags wave during protest for workers rights &#8211;\u00a0Patrick Pr\u00e9martin\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File:Â鶹APP_May1_2002_DCP_8570.JPG\">Source wiki commons<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>In 1936, the <em>Front Populaire<\/em> won legislative election as a coalition of left wing parties. The <em>Front Populaire <\/em>is remembered fondly by the people of France thanks to the enactment of labour laws that include paid vacation, limiting work to 40 hours a week, and the legal right to strike.<\/p>\n<p>This was followed by a series of strikes known as Les Greves de la Joie (the strikes of happiness) where workers gathered around factories and businesses while singing and dancing.<\/p>\n<h4>Demonstrations in more recent years<\/h4>\n<p>If you are coming to Â鶹APP to see the Eiffel Tower, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top-10-fun-facts-about-the-sacre-coeur\/\">church of Montmartre<\/a> or the beautiful area of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/the-best-streets-in-le-marais\/\">Le Marais<\/a>, there is a possibility that you may also witness one of the various forms of demonstrations taking place within the city of Â鶹APP.<\/p>\n<p>However, if you want to avoid the congestion of an upcoming demonstration, we recommend steering clear of prominent protest areas, such as Place de la Republique and Nation. The left bank is guaranteed to offer peace and quiet. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/tour\/paris-walking-tours\/left-bank\/\">Discover our free walking tour of the Latin Quarter<\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>See list of upcoming Â鶹APP demonstrations <a href=\"https:\/\/paris.demosphere.net\/manifestations-paris\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>While demonstrations are relatively common place in Â鶹APP, not all protests carry the stigma of violence that the more recent g<em>ilets jaunes\u00a0<\/em>movement does.<\/p>\n<p>In the summer of this year, rail workers from the french train company SNCF went on strike against president Macron&#8217;s attempt to roll back job security policies. While ultimately proving futile, the strikes reeked havoc on both citizens trying to commute to work and tourists venturing out of Â鶹APP to visit the countryside of France.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13261\" src=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/nuit_debout_-_paris_-_41_mars_01.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"5472\" height=\"3648\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/nuit_debout_-_paris_-_41_mars_01.jpg 924w, https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/nuit_debout_-_paris_-_41_mars_01-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/nuit_debout_-_paris_-_41_mars_01-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/nuit_debout_-_paris_-_41_mars_01-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/nuit_debout_-_paris_-_41_mars_01-816x544.jpg 816w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 5472px) 100vw, 5472px\" \/><em>Protesters gather at the Place de la R\u00e9publique during the Nuit Debout movement<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Another more recent example of a popular social movement in Â鶹APP that led to wide reaching demonstrations was the\u00a0<em>Nuit Debout\u00a0<\/em>movement. In 2016, protesters gathered around Place de la R\u00e9publique and held overnight assemblies.<\/p>\n<p>Like the <em>gilets jaunes\u00a0\u00a0<\/em>movement, the original themes of these demonstrations were left relatively open-ended. Protesters marched for everything from universal basic income to the gender pay gap.<\/p>\n<h4>Ways in which Â鶹APPians protest<\/h4>\n<p>While there can be violence, the majority of french demonstrators are peaceful and vaguely resemble outdoor parties. The first protest I attended was for the french SNCF rail workers and I was instantly taken by the spirit of the demonstrations. Some protesters were singing songs and marching through streets with puppets and signs, while others were staked out on the ground with beers and friends.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13267\" src=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/fires-burn-during-protests.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"880\" height=\"590\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/fires-burn-during-protests.jpg 880w, https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/fires-burn-during-protests-300x201.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/fires-burn-during-protests-768x515.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/fires-burn-during-protests-816x547.jpg 816w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 880px) 100vw, 880px\" \/><em>Gilets Jaunes walk around the flaming\u00a0<\/em><i>barricades<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Â鶹APPian protests usually begin near the eastern part of Â鶹APP. The demonstrations sweep through the grand boulevards and filter out into one of the large plazas of Â鶹APP, such as Nation or Bastille.<\/p>\n<p>From the outside, these groups may appear to be an unorganized congregation of protesters, but, in reality, it is broken up between specific unions or certain political parties, depending on the source of the movement.<\/p>\n<p>While walking around, you are likely to hear music. Most commonly sung by French demonstrators is the Italian revolutionary song &#8220;Bella Ciao.&#8221; The catchy tune and rebellious rhythm keeps the protesters moving onwards.<\/p>\n<h4>The future of the\u00a0<em>gilets jaunes\u00a0<\/em>movement<\/h4>\n<p>After the riot police had reclaimed the Champs \u00c9lys\u00e9es and began stifling the fires of the afternoon, the\u00a0<em>gilets jaunes\u00a0<\/em>protesters spread out to the smaller roads surrounding the Arc de Triomphe. They repeated the same process of building barricades, protesting, and then, inevitably, being overrun by the police.<\/p>\n<p>I decided that after nearly three hours of running from the impending clouds of tear gas that I&#8217;d had enough and it was time for me to return to my smokeless apartment before it got too dark. I watched as a group of police officers began to block the oncoming traffic while riot police commenced to march in the direction of the rising smoke.<\/p>\n<p>Still trying to find my way back home, I asked the nearest police officer if I could reach the river by taking the now blocked boulevard. He told me to turn around and find another way.
