Lots of political rallies take place there, because it leads from Republic Plaza to Nation Plaza. But Voltaire is of course first and foremost a great man of French literature. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, if you\u2019re familiar with French literature and philosophy, it\u2019s almost certain that you\u2019ve heard of the French author, Fran\u00e7ois-Marie Arouet, otherwise known as Voltaire! Voltaire is considered to be one of the most influential authors of the Enlightenment movement in the 18th century. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before I get started on the 5 most interesting facts on this French literary superstar, you may be asking yourself, what is the Enlightenment movement?! <\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Setting the historical scene:<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the 18th century, historians and philosophers were in the spotlight. Sometimes called the \u201cCentury of Philosophy\u201d, this time period was brimming with new ideas. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the intellectuals of the time, a complete upheaval of traditional authority was necessary for change, and they were the first group of philosophers to argue that humankind could change and thrive through the use of rationality. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s also why the Enlightenment is sometimes referred to as the Age of Reason. Many historians credit this movement for the beginning of both the French and American <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top-5-fun-facts-about-the-french-revolution\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">revolutions<\/a>, talk about a game changer!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Now that you have some background on the time period, let\u2019s talk Voltaire!<\/b><\/p>\n<h4><b>Fact #1 <\/b><\/h4>\n<h4><b>No one <\/b><b><i>really<\/i><\/b><b> knows where the pen name Voltaire came from&#8230;<\/b><\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There could be many reasons why Voltaire decided to adopt a pen name. There was the strict censorship at the time, and being an author who wrote about new and innovative ideas (that sometimes poked fun at the royalty!) was a dangerous profession.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-13178 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/voltaire.jpg\" alt=\"Portrait Voltaire\" width=\"400\" height=\"483\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/voltaire.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/voltaire-248x300.jpg 248w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He could have also chosen to ditch his family name out of disrespect for his father, who never approved of his writing career. Even after sending him to the best law schools in France, it just wasn&#8217;t what Voltaire wanted to do with his life. His father never understood why, and therefore their relationship deteriorated. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In any case, the author never explained why he chose Voltaire! There are a few different theories going around on where it came from. This includes the possibility that Voltaire is an acronym of the Latin spelling of his last name, or that it stems from a childhood nickname le petit volontaire, or &#8220;determined little thing&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Voltaire died in 1778, it looks like this is one mystery that will remain unsolved.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Fact #2 <\/b><\/h4>\n<h4><b>Voltaire had a soft spot for animals<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-13183 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/voltaire-tapestry.jpg\" alt=\"Tapestry Voltaire\" width=\"944\" height=\"553\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/voltaire-tapestry.jpg 924w, https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/voltaire-tapestry-300x176.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/voltaire-tapestry-768x450.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/voltaire-tapestry-816x478.jpg 816w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 944px) 100vw, 944px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These days it\u2019s normal to hear the words \u201cI\u2019m vegetarian\u201d &#8211; there seems to be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/tour\/paris-walking-tours\/vegetarian-gluten-free-french-food-tour\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vegetarian<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and vegan options at almost every restaurant. It\u2019s even more normal to hear about people advocating for animals rights! <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This was not the case in the 18th century. That didn\u2019t stop Voltaire &#8211; he published many works condemning the mistreatment of animals. He writes in the Philosophical Dictionary:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHow pitiful, and what poverty of mind, to have said that the animals are machines deprived of understanding and feeling . . . \u201c<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Voltaire never explicitly spoke about being a vegetarian (probably because at the time the notion didn\u2019t exist other than for religious reasons), he also wrote with disgust that \u201cMen fed upon carnage, and drinking strong drinks, have all an impoisoned and acrid blood which drives them mad in a hundred different ways.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eating meat can drive you mad?! No wonder he wasn\u2019t eating it!<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Fact #3 <\/b><\/h4>\n<h4><b>Rebel with a cause: Voltaire was exiled and imprisoned many times<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I mentioned above that there were very strict censorship laws in the 18th century. This meant that speaking out against religion, royalty, or the government was strictly off limits. Unfortunately for Voltaire, these were a few of his favorite things to criticize. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Voltaire was exiled for the first time in 1716 for making fun of the duc d&#8217;Orleans, and when he returned to Â鶹APP in 1717, he was soon imprisoned in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/things-to-do-in-paris-on-bastille-day\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bastille<\/a> for writing poetry that put certain French laws into question. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once more in 1726 Voltaire is imprisoned in Bastille and then exiled, this time to England, where he stayed for 3 years.<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-13179 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/bastille-prison.jpeg\" alt=\"Bastille Prisonner\" width=\"1456\" height=\"1824\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/bastille-prison.jpeg 738w, https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/bastille-prison-239x300.jpeg 239w, https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/bastille-prison-768x962.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/bastille-prison-817x1024.jpeg 817w, https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/bastille-prison-816x1022.jpeg 816w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1456px) 100vw, 1456px\" \/> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There, he continued to speak his mind with his book Letters on the English, which again angered the French government, causing Voltaire to go into hiding for nearly 15 years in a small town outside of Â鶹APP. Poor guy!<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Fact #4<\/b><\/h4>\n<h4><b>Voltaire and coffee: a love affair<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re anything like me, mornings are hard. But there is one thing that makes them easier: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/how-to-choose-a-cafe-in-paris\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">coffee<\/a>! Find Le Procope in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/tour\/paris-walking-tours\/paris-night-tour\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6th arrondissement.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Voltaire is also said to have written up to 18 hours a day. The 40 cups are making more and more sense&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Fact #5 <\/b><\/h4>\n<h4><b>Voltaire was Sir Isaac Newton\u2019s number 1 fan<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-13181 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/isaac-newton.jpg\" alt=\"Isaac Newton Voltaire\" width=\"396\" height=\"484\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/isaac-newton.jpg 396w, https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/isaac-newton-245x300.jpg 245w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 396px) 100vw, 396px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of us have heard the story of the apple that fell on the head of Sir Isaac Newton, causing a major eureka moment in the discovery of gravity. When Voltaire discovered Newton\u2019s ideas, the rest is history.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Although the two never met, Voltaire played a big part in spreading the word with his book Elements of the Philosophy of Newton.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Voltaire\u2019s fame helped inform the word about Newton\u2019s theories. In fact, Voltaire was one of the first to write the story of how Newton discovered gravity through an apple!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not only did Voltaire help popularize Newton, his books and essays were considered to be more serious than the poetry and plays he was famous for. Voltaire was soon taken more seriously as a writer and a philosopher as a result. A win-win for the two of them!<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Encounter Voltaire yourself<\/h4>\n<p>Â鶹APP offers plenty of ways to encounter Voltaire: some 100 years after his death in 1775, his heart was installed at the National Library, la Biblioth\u00e8que Nationale. You can visit any week day, at Quai Fran\u00e7ois Mauriac, 75706. It is open all week from 9AM to 8PM, but only in the afternoons on Mondays and Sundays.<\/p>\n<p>Voltaire was then transferred to the Pantheon in 1791 &#8211; to be right across from his worst enemy, Rousseau. However, it was the Com\u00e9die Fran\u00e7aise, the national French theater, that won Voltaire&#8217;s brain.\u00a0In 1927 the brain still existed, however it was not correctly preserved and eventually decanted, shrunk, and disappeared. This leaves us with only legend&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><b>That\u2019s a wrap!<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There you have it, my 5 facts about Voltaire you should know.
