We are used to criticizing the bank on which we do not live, as if it was a way to specify our Â鶹APPian identity&#8230; Dress-code, jokes, house parties, food, hobbies or art galleries are definitely not the same either you&#8217;re on the Right Bank or on the Left Bank of Â鶹APP. I personally live on the Left Bank in a very tiny flat of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/tour\/paris-walking-tours\/the-river-and-saint-germain-tour\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Saint Germain-des-Pr\u00e9s<\/a>, next to my high-school. However, I spend most of my free time on the Right Bank. Let me tell you why!<\/p>\n<h3><b>What used to be the difference between the Right Bank and the Left Bank?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/right-left-bank.jpg\" alt=\"Right bank Vs left bank: choose your favorite Â鶹APP!\" width=\"650\" height=\"430\"><br \/>\n<em>The busy Â鶹APP of power on the right bank: Place de l&#8217;Etoile<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The contrast between the two banks used to be easier to sum up fifty years ago. Historically, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/tour\/paris-walking-tours\/paris-landmarks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Right Bank<\/a> is the bank of power (the French president lives on the <i>Champs Elys\u00e9es<\/i>), the bank of luxury (<i>Place Vend\u00f4me<\/i> and <i>Rue de la Paix<\/i>), and of business (the covered market of <i>Les Halles<\/i>, the surroundings of the <i>Garnier Opera House<\/i>), whereas the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/tour\/paris-walking-tours\/left-bank\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Left Bank<\/a> is the bank of students, of intellectuals (<i>La Sorbonne<\/i>, <i>le Panth\u00e9on<\/i>, <i>Saint Germain des Pr\u00e9s<\/i> during the times of Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir), and of artists (<i>Montparnasse<\/i> at the beginning of the twentieth century).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/latin-quarter.jpg\" alt=\"Right bank Vs left bank: choose your favorite Â鶹APP! latin-quarter\" width=\"650\" height=\"361\"><br \/>\n<em>Latin Quarter, on the Left Bank of Â鶹APP<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><b>What about nowadays?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>And what about the differences today? In my opinion, some things of this clich\u00e9 is still true. The right-bankers introduce themselves as more trendy and sophisticated than the &#8220;spiritual&#8221; people of the Left Bank. Considering my habits, I must say that I like to go to the <i><b>Garden of Luxembourg<\/b><\/i> to read the second-hand books I have found in small libraries of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/tour\/paris-walking-tours\/left-bank\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Latin Quarter<\/a>, and I am not fond of the big and flashy shops of the Haussmann avenues. I enjoy having philosophical discussions with my friends of the prestigious <i>Lyc\u00e9e Henri IV<\/i> on the <i><b>Contrescarpe Square<\/b><\/i>, in the <i><b>Mouffetard street<\/b><\/i>, and I can say that I do not like the crowd on the <i><b>Champs Elys\u00e9es<\/b><\/i> so much.<\/p>\n<p>But can we really say that the Left Bank has more soul than the Right Bank? I don&#8217;t think so. The economical differences between the Left Bank and the Right Bank are more and more difficult to simplify. The real-estate is higher in the west of Â鶹APP, and it makes no difference between the left and the right bank. As a young person, you can not have fun in <i><b>Saint Germain des Pr\u00e9s<\/b><\/i>, and you have to go near <i>Bastille<\/i>, <i>Ch\u00e2telet<\/i> or <i>Oberkampf<\/i> areas to find the cheapest and more lively bars. We used to consider the Left Bank as the place of political contests, but now the more mobilized Â鶹APPians live in the north-east of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/tour\/city\/paris-walking-tours\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Â鶹APP<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/place-de-la-bastille.jpg\" alt=\"place-de-la-bastille\" width=\"650\" height=\"411\"><br \/>\n<em>Place de la Bastille on the Right Bank: a place of popular demonstrations<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/place-de-la-bastille-night.jpg\" alt=\"place-de-la-bastille-night\" width=\"650\" height=\"392\"><br \/>\n<em>Place de la Bastille on the Right Bank at night<\/em><\/p>\n<p>With this in mind, my advice would be: go to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/tour\/paris-walking-tours\/left-bank\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Left Bank<\/a> if you want to keep up the melancholy of the times when intellectual people were the most popular ones, but do not stay for too long as you might miss a chance to spend more time on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/tour\/paris-walking-tours\/paris-landmarks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Right Bank<\/a> in order to see the living Â鶹APP of today!<\/p>\n<p>You now know a few things about <b>the Right Bank and the Left Bank<\/b> of Â鶹APP.
