This gothic cathedral is probably the most famous one of its kind. Located in City Island, \u201c<i>Ile de la Cit\u00e9<\/i>\u201d in French, in Â鶹APP fourth district, the construction of the <i><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/tour\/paris-walking-tours\/notre-dame-and-the-heart-of-paris-tour\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Notre Dame Cathedral<\/a><\/i><\/b> lasted for almost two centuries! <\/p>\n<p>This Â鶹APPian landmark is iconic! It presents so many details that no longer exist in contemporary architecture. The design of the facade is so wonderful and harmonious, making it a perfect example of gothic architecture! The dimensions, the stained glass windows, the statues and sculptures are unmissable! On the contrary of most churches in Â鶹APP that are gothic ones, the <i><b>Sacre-Coeur Basilica<\/i><\/b> was constructed in a Romano-Byzantine style. Its construction started in 1875 and ended in 1914, so it is quite a recent church! <\/p>\n<p>During your visit of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/tour\/paris-walking-tours\/montmartre-tour\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Montmartre<\/b><\/a> neighborhood, the <i><b>Basilique du Sacr\u00e9 C\u0153ur<\/i><\/b> is obviously not to be missed! It is on top of the hill and offers one of the bests views over Â鶹APP. When you reach the top and stand in front of the <i><b>Sacre-Coeur Basilica<\/i><\/b> with Â鶹APP at your feet, it feels as if the time had stopped. It reminds you of how little you are in this world and that life is to be enjoyed. Its construction began in 1532 and ended in 1633. Its style is late gothic architecture, but it also has some Renaissance details, that makes it even more unique and one of my favorite Â鶹APP churches! You will find the church between <i><b>Les Halles<\/i><\/b> and the <i><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/tour\/paris-walking-tours\/paris-food-tour\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Montorgueil<\/a><\/i><\/b> neighborhood. I love this church and the fact that whenever I enter the church, I feel so at peace. Outside there\u2019s the crowd and the noise, but once you get inside, everything is so quiet and peaceful!<\/p>\n<h4>In the heart of the Latin Quarter: Saint-\u00c9tienne-du-Mont<\/h4>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/saint-etienne-du-mont.jpg\" alt=\"Saint-Etienne-du-Mont\" width=\"650\" height=\"383\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-11399\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/saint-etienne-du-mont.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/saint-etienne-du-mont-300x177.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/saint-etienne-du-mont-610x359.jpg 610w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The <i><b>Saint-\u00c9tienne-du-Mont<\/i><\/b> is found in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/tour\/paris-walking-tours\/left-bank\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Latin Quarter<\/b><\/a>, next to the <i><b>Panth\u00e9on<\/i><\/b>. So if you happen to have a walk through the Latin Quarter, you really shouldn\u2019t miss the opportunity to visit this church that is both gothic and renaissance style. The inside is very luminous and and the church houses one of the oldest organs of the city! At <i><b>Saint-\u00c9tienne-du-Mont<\/i><\/b>, you will also find the tombs of important French figures, such as Blaise Pascal and Jean Racine. <\/p>\n<p>\u201c<i>There are no secrets that time does not reveal.<\/i>\u201d &#8211; Jean Racine<\/p>\n<h4>Attend a concert: Sainte Chapelle<\/h4>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/sainte-chapelle-church.jpg\" alt=\"Sainte Chapelle Church\" width=\"650\" height=\"436\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-11400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/sainte-chapelle-church.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/sainte-chapelle-church-300x201.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/sainte-chapelle-church-610x409.jpg 610w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This church is located on the City Island, near the <i><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/tour\/paris-walking-tours\/notre-dame-and-the-heart-of-paris-tour\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Notre Dame<\/a><\/i><\/b>. The <i><b>Sainte Chapelle<\/i><\/b> dates back from 1150. It was commissioned by Louis the 9th to house Jesus Christ\u2019s crown of thorns he brought back from the crusade. Like the <i><b>Notre Dame Cathedral<\/i><\/b>, the chapel is another very good example of gothic architecture. The stained glass is particularly impressive! The pillars are very thin and thus give the impression that the roof is held only by the glass.<\/p>\n<h4>Before visiting the Marais: Saint Merry<\/h4>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/top10churchesinparis6.jpg\" alt=\"top10churchesinparis6\" width=\"768\" height=\"256\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11171\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/top10churchesinparis6.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/top10churchesinparis6-300x100.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/top10churchesinparis6-610x203.jpg 610w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This flamboyant gothic style church is called <i><b>Saint Merry Church<\/i><\/b>. During the eighteenth century, the inside decorations were becoming more and more similar to the baroque style. And you will notice that this church has no windows, all the lightning come from the domes. If you pay attention to the paintings and sculptures, you will be impressed by all the details! <\/p>\n<p>You can find the <i><b>Saint-Merry<\/i><\/b> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/tour\/paris-walking-tours\/trendy-marais-tour\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Marais<\/b><\/a> neighborhood, at <i>76 rue de la Verrerie, near the <i><b>Centre Pompidou<\/i><\/b>.<\/p>\n<h4>A little surprise: Saint-Sulpice<\/h4>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/saint-sulpice.jpg\" alt=\"Saint-Sulpice\" width=\"650\" height=\"416\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-11401\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/saint-sulpice.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/saint-sulpice-300x192.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/saint-sulpice-610x390.jpg 610w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You probably already know this church from the <i>Da Vinci Code<\/i>! The construction of the <i><b>Saint-Sulpice Church<\/i><\/b> started in 1646 and ended in 1870. It is located next to the <i><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/tour\/paris-walking-tours\/left-bank\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Luxembourg garden<\/a><\/i><\/b>, on <i><b>Saint-Sulpice Square<\/i><\/b> (<i>Place Saint-Sulpice<\/i>). You will love to watch the sunset as it hits the church\u2019s facade. This church is really beautiful, especially its exteriors that are quite unique! Inside you will find many Delacroix paintings! <\/p>\n<h4>Celebrate victories: La Madeleine<\/h4>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/la-madeleine.jpg\" alt=\"La Madeleine\" width=\"650\" height=\"357\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-11402\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/la-madeleine.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/la-madeleine-300x165.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/la-madeleine-610x335.jpg 610w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The construction of <i><b>La Madeleine<\/i><\/b> was ordered by Napoleon, the first. He wanted a temple to celebrate his armies victories. It then became a church in 1845. Inspired by the Greek and Ancient Rome architecture, the church is a good example of neoclassical architecture. Inside you will be amazed by all the columns, paintings and statues! You can see <i><b>La Madeleine<\/i><\/b> from the <i><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/tour\/paris-walking-tours\/paris-landmarks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Place de la Concorde<\/a><\/i><\/b>. On August, 23rd and 24th of 1572, a terrible event happened known as the <i>St. Bartholomew\u2019s Day Massacre<\/i>, five thousand to thirty thousand protestants were assassinated. The <i><b>Saint-Germain-l&#8217;Auxerrois Church<\/i><\/b> played an important role in the understanding of this event because the chuch&#8217;s bells rang that night to signal the beginning of the massacre.  <\/p>\n<p>Despite its unfortunate participation in the massacre, one has to admit the church is stunning, especially its stain-glass windows! <\/p>\n<h4>A Jesuit church: Saint-Paul-Saint-Louis<\/h4>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/saint-paul-saint-louis.jpg\" alt=\"Saint-Paul-Saint-Louis\" width=\"650\" height=\"425\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-11404\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/saint-paul-saint-louis.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/saint-paul-saint-louis-300x196.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/saint-paul-saint-louis-610x399.jpg 610w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This church is actually not very famous, but it\u2019s essential to the understanding of the history of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/tour\/city\/paris-walking-tours\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Â鶹APP<\/strong><\/a>, but also of France at the same time. It\u2019s a baroque church and one of the first Jesuit churches of Â鶹APP. Inside the church, you can see a commemorative plaque of all the priests who were murdered during the Revolution and many more details all equally interesting.<\/p>\n<p>The outside looks of the <i><b>Saint Paul Church<\/i><\/b> are quite simple, but the inside details and architecture are outstanding!
