However, there is one problem that every traveler knows and fears most of all: not being able to find a free bathroom when you desperately need one. If you\u2019re <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/travel-paris-kids\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">traveling with kids<\/a>, you definitely know what I\u2019m talking about!<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, finding toilets and realizing at the last moment that you have to pay to use them is the worst surprise. If you\u2019re on a budget and don\u2019t want to spend more than you already have, you\u2019re probably on the hunt for free bathrooms everywhere you go! You\u2019ll discover that in Â鶹APP there are actually a lot of ways to go to the bathroom freely, but be warned: you have to be okay with the sometimes not-so-clean toilets and with the idea of pushing closed doors&#8230; So, if you\u2019re <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/plan-trip-paris\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">planning a trip to Â鶹APP<\/a>, this article will give you all my insider\u2019s tips on how and where to find a free bathroom in Â鶹APP!<\/p>\n<h4>Public bathrooms<\/h4>\n<p>The first option to go to the toilets in Â鶹APP is to find one of the public bathrooms, called <i>sanisettes<\/i>. You can find them all over the streets of Â鶹APP, particularly in the touristy areas such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/best-things-to-do-in-paris-first-district\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">first<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/best-things-to-do-in-paris-fourth-district\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fourth<\/a> district. In general, there is one or two next to every big landmark of Â鶹APP, such as the <strong><i>Eiffel Tower<\/i><\/strong>, the <strong><i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/tour\/paris-walking-tours\/notre-dame-and-the-heart-of-paris-tour\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cathedral Notre-Dame<\/a><\/i><\/strong>, the <strong><i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/the-best-way-to-visit-the-louvre-museum\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Louvre Museum<\/a><\/i><\/strong>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>You just have to spot a street sign that gives the directions to the bathroom. Most of them (especially those around the big landmarks) are open 24h a day, but some of them open at 6 am and close at 1 am or 10 pm. However, during the day, you might have to wait in line for a moment.<\/p>\n<p><u>Tip:<\/u> in every <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top-10-best-parks-and-gardens-in-paris\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Â鶹APPian park or garden<\/a>, you\u2019ll be able to find a public bathroom so don\u2019t hesitate when you see some green spaces! If you happen to be in a neighborhood without any <i>sanisettes<\/i> or you just can\u2019t find them, here are some other ways to find free bathrooms.<\/p>\n<h4>Malls<\/h4>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/galeries_lafayette.jpeg\" alt=\"galeries_lafayette\" width=\"650\" height=\"432\"><\/p>\n<p>Big malls in Â鶹APP are free to access and they all have free public bathrooms: it\u2019s the perfect place to go! They are usually pretty large and clean, so don\u2019t hesitate! You can find one just near the metro station <i>Nation<\/i> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/best-things-to-do-in-paris-twentieth-district\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">twentieth<\/a> district, one next to the metro station <i>Couronnes<\/i> in the eleventh district, one next to the metro station <i>Place d\u2019Italie<\/i> in the thirteenth district, and one near the <strong><i>Louvre<\/i><\/strong>, in the first district.<\/li>\n<li><strong><i>BHV Marais<\/i><\/strong>: located in the fourth district, next to the metro station <i>Hotel de Ville<\/i> in Rivoli street; it\u2019s not far from <strong><i>Notre-Dame<\/i><\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong><i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/take-a-walk-through-chatelet-les-halles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Les Halles<\/a><\/i><\/strong>: located in the metro station <i>Les Halles<\/i> next to <i>Ch\u00e2telet<\/i>, in the first district. You can access the mall directly from the metro station or outside.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Parking lots<\/h4>\n<p>Here\u2019s a pretty unknown option. In some of the underground parking lots in Â鶹APP, you\u2019ll find a bathroom. However, be warned that not all of the parking lots have them so don\u2019t wait until the last moment to try this technique you might have a bad surprise! Some of the parking lots I know that have toilets are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the parking lot Place Vend\u00f4me,<\/li>\n<li>the parking lot Place de la Concorde,<\/li>\n<li>a parking lot next to The Louvre or<\/li>\n<li>the parking lot near Notre-Dame.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These bathrooms won\u2019t probably be the cleanest, but it can really be a life-saver!<\/p>\n<h4>Hospitals<\/h4>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/hospitals.jpg\" alt=\"hospitals\" width=\"650\" height=\"367\"><\/p>\n<p>Okay, I know what you\u2019re thinking: how will I find a hospital in Â鶹APP when I need a bathroom? I\u2019ll agree that hospitals can\u2019t be found on every street, but there are two hospitals that are located near big Â鶹APPian monuments that you\u2019ll maybe visit.<\/p>\n<p>The public bathrooms in those areas are often crowded, so this is a better option.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><i>Hospital H\u00f4tel-Dieu<\/i>: just on your left when you\u2019re facing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/tour\/paris-walking-tours\/notre-dame-and-the-heart-of-paris-tour\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Notre-Dame<\/a>, on the Cit\u00e9 Island<\/li>\n<li><i>Hospital Necker<\/i>: located next to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top-10-things-montparnasse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Montparnasse Tower<\/a> in the fifteenth district. From the tower, take the <i>Maine Avenue<\/i> and turn left in <i>Vaugirard street<\/i>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Don\u2019t be shy, enter the hospitals and look for the bathroom sign. These are public spaces so everyone has the right to enter!<\/p>\n<h4>Caf\u00e9s, restaurants and bars<\/h4>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/cafe-rest-bar.jpg\" alt=\"find-free-bathroom-paris\" width=\"650\" height=\"384\"><\/p>\n<p>The last option on this list! You can try to find a bar, a restaurant or a caf\u00e9: they all have free bathrooms. However, some of them will ask you to buy a drink or a meal in order to use their toilets. My advice: ask politely a waiter if you can use their bathroom. They\u2019ll let you use them a lot of the times, and if they ask you to buy something you can still decline and continue your search. You should ask them in French (and with a big smile), they\u2019ll be more willing to help you if you show that you\u2019re doing!<\/p>\n<p>The sentences you should know when asking for the bathroom:<br \/>\n&#8220;<i>Bonjour, est-ce que je peux utiliser vos toilettes s\u2019il-vous-pla\u00eet?<\/i>&#8221; &#8211; Hello, may I use your bathroom, please?<br \/>\n&#8220;<i>Tant pis<\/i>&#8221; &#8211; Too bad (if they refuse)<br \/>\nAnd of course: &#8220;<i>Merci beaucoup!<\/i>&#8221; &#8211; Thank you so much!<\/p>\n<p>However, this technique is more adapted for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/12-things-to-do-in-paris-as-a-solo-traveler\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">solo travelers<\/a> (especially for girls).
