Outrage and sorrow have swept through the streets of Dublin as the ancient mummified remains of five individuals met a devastating fate in a fire at the iconic St Michan\u2019s Church crypt. The historic church, located on Church Street, is renowned as a popular tourist destination and has left visitors and locals alike in shock following this heartbreaking incident.<\/p>\n

Among the irreplaceable artefacts lost in the fire was an 800-year-old mummy affectionately known as ‘The Crusader’, alongside four others with a history stretching back 400 years. The irreplaceable loss has left the community reeling, with many expressing their deep sadness and dismay at the destruction of these priceless historical treasures.<\/p>\n

The catastrophic event was discovered by a vigilant tour guide, who promptly raised the alarm upon detecting smoke within the crypt’s vault. Thanks to the swift response of the Dublin Fire Brigade, the fire was contained before it could inflict further damage. Thankfully, there have been no reported injuries as a result of the blaze. Still, the treasured mummified remains have suffered irreparable harm from both fire and water damage incurred during extinguishing efforts.<\/p>\n

To shed light on the circumstances surrounding this tragedy, a suspect has been apprehended in connection with the fire under the Criminal Damage Act. Authorities are conducting a thorough investigation and are appealing to the public for any information that may assist in shedding light on this distressing event.<\/p>\n

The St Michan\u2019s mummies, affectionately referred to as the ‘big four’, have long captivated visitors with their enigmatic presence. Displayed without lids on their coffins, these ancient remnants hold profound historical significance, with ‘The Crusader’, in particular, enthralling visitors with his towering stature and the legendary belief that touching his outstretched finger would bestow good fortune.<\/p>\n

This devastating incident is not the first time that the cherished mummified remains have faced peril. In February 2019, ‘The Crusader’ suffered another blow when he was callously decapitated during a break-in at the crypt. The ensuing outrage led to the apprehension of the perpetrator, who faced charges of criminal damage including desecration of a deceased body.<\/p>\n

As the community grapples with the magnitude of this loss, the St Michan\u2019s Church remains closed to the public to facilitate a comprehensive forensic examination conducted by the Garda Technical Bureau.
