The ANWB motoring organization reported a record-breaking 1,150 kilometres of traffic jams by 5:30 pm, making it the busiest rush hour of the year so far. <\/span>The storms, which hit on May 21, 2024, brought strong winds and torrential rain, affecting large parts of the country, particularly Limburg and Noord- and Zuid-Holland. The rainfall was significant, with some areas receiving between 10 and 40 millimetres of rain. <\/span><\/p>\n

Last year, Amsterdam experienced a warm spring, with temperatures reaching 27\u00b0C on May 14th. The average temperature in May 2023 was 16\u00b0C, with a high of 27\u00b0C and a low of 7\u00b0C. June 2023 saw similar warm weather, with temperatures averaging around 20\u00b0C. This recent stormy weather is a reminder that Amsterdam’s climate can be unpredictable, even in the spring season.<\/span><\/p>\n

The aftermath of the storm left its mark on various parts of the country. In Oisterwijk, a supermarket was forced to close due to flooding, while in Overlangel, locals had to relocate their cars to higher ground to avoid the rising waters. Amsterdam itself experienced intense gusts of wind that toppled trees, causing minor incidents like a tree falling on a delivery van, fortunately without injuries.<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite the stormy weather, the forecast for the upcoming days in Amsterdam remains mixed. Expect windy conditions, overcast skies with intermittent sunshine and showers, with temperatures hovering around 19\u00b0C, as per the KNMI weather bureau.
