What started as a collaborative project between art students in Germany and Turkey exploded into a provocative exhibition challenging traditional views of art, culture and urban spaces. The PERA Reverse show at Istanbul’s Pera Museum doesn’t just hang paintings on walls – it turned the entire concept of an art exhibition inside out. The Pera Museum in Istanbul is set to unveil a groundbreaking exhibition, “PERA Reverse”, from May 23 to August 18, 2024.

The three exhibit sections – Globals, Steps and Speculations – formed a suprisingly disorienting multi-sensory experience. Ordinary objects like detergent bottles and pool scenes represents the hollow facade of the “global city.” A dramatically drooping chandelier hints at the fragility of cultural institutions.

According to the curators, PERA Reverse doesn’t just put art in a museum – it turned the museum itself into living, evolving artworks that question who gets to define culture and urban spaces.

According to Mona Mahall, professor at Bauhaus University, Weimar “PERA Reverse is self-instituting shared practices to explore how institutions shape different places in an increasingly connected yet fractured world.”

The innovative exhibition brings together a diverse array of contributors from cities like Istanbul, Tehran, Hong Kong, Berlin and more. Offering new viewpoints on Istanbul’s art spaces and urban contexts are artists, architects and researchers.

PERA Reverse showcases fresh collaborative insights by reversing traditional perspectives on art and urban spaces. This exploration is a must-see.

Mark your calendars for May 23 and be part of this extraordinary journey at the Pera Museum.
