This year, the first May bank holiday Sunday coincides with the annual Cinco de Mayo celebrations. Despite the misconception, the festivities do not mark Mexican Independence Day, which falls on September 16. Instead, the holiday commemorates the unexpected victory of the Battle of Puebla by the Mexican Republic over France in 1862.<\/span><\/p>\n

While the holiday is mainly celebrated in Mexico\u2019s eastern Puebla state, the US and UK have embraced the fiesta as an opportunity to celebrate Mexican culture. In London, a variety of events are taking place to mark the occasion.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to the<\/span> Independent<\/span><\/a>, Covent Garden and Rotary Square will come to life on Sunday from 11 am to 6 pm with artisan vendors, face painting, and live music for a family-friendly Cinco de Mayo Fest. The event will feature street food vendors, including La Burreria, La Parrillada, and Qbites, handmade jewellery, and candle stands.<\/span><\/p>\n

Parsons Green\u2019s 1910 Cantina is hosting a Cinco de Mayo fiesta on Sunday with a special menu of flavoured margaritas and buckets of beers with lychee on ice. The restaurant is opening late for the bank holiday and will offer taco-sharing boards and upbeat Latino tunes that can be enjoyed by the whole table.<\/span><\/p>\n

For a week-long celebration of bespoke cocktails, agave flights, and live mariachi bands, Los Mochis\u2019 Pan-Pacific blend of Mexican and Japanese cuisine in Notting Hill is a big hitter in the Cinco de Mayo arena. Unique offerings extend the party beyond the main event on May 5, with music and dancing from 6 pm to 9 pm and a host of mighty Mexican dishes from crab tostaditos to shrimp guacamole.<\/span><\/p>\n

Cinco de Mayo is a chance to enjoy the colourful combination of festivals, street parties, food, and folk dancing that has become synonymous with the holiday. With London hosting a variety of events, there is an opportunity for everyone to indulge in tequila, guacamole, and tacos while dancing to the music of mariachi bands or taking a mezcal masterclass.<\/span><\/p>\n
