The city’s finance chief, Hester van Buren, addressed the issue by saying, “We can\u2019t simply put a fence around Amsterdam.” Instead, Amsterdam is taking a proactive approach to manage tourism and promote sustainability.<\/p>\n

One of the measures Amsterdam is implementing is reducing the number of riverboat cruises. By 2028, the city aims to cut the number of cruise ships from 2,300 to 1,150, decreasing tourist numbers and impacting the economy. This move is part of a broader strategy to alleviate the strain on the city’s infrastructure and create a more balanced and sustainable tourism landscape. <\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to reducing river cruises, Amsterdam has launched the second phase of its “stay away” campaign, targeting budget tourists who come to the city to smoke weed and have a good time. The City has also hiked tourist taxes to some of the highest levels in the world and is planning to release research on the impact of ocean-going cruises, signalling a comprehensive approach to managing tourism influx.<\/p>\n

While these measures may present challenges for the hotel industry, Amsterdam is committed to finding innovative solutions.
