However, one unique cultural heritage is at risk of disappearing from the iconic skyline of minarets and domes. The mahya, ornate calligraphic panels hung between minarets during religious festivals and celebrations, faces an uncertain future as fewer artisans remain to continue this historic art form.<\/p>\n<p>The mahya tradition dates back over 400 years to the Ottoman era. Originally illuminated by oil lamps at night, these decorative panels adorned with Arabic calligraphy and intricate designs would stretch between minarets, announcing blessings and well-wishes to the city below. Mahya added a magical touch to the nights of Istanbul, the strings of lamps casting a warm glow over the city&#8217;s famous mosques and surroundings.<\/p>\n<div class=\"lyte-wrapper fourthree\" style=\"width:480px;max-width:100%;margin:5px;\"><div class=\"lyMe\" id=\"WYL_F0aVQSprLv4\"><div id=\"lyte_F0aVQSprLv4\" data-src=\"\/\/i.ytimg.com\/vi\/F0aVQSprLv4\/hqdefault.jpg\" class=\"pL\"><div class=\"tC\"><div class=\"tT\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"play\"><\/div><div class=\"ctrl\"><div class=\"Lctrl\"><\/div><div class=\"Rctrl\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><noscript><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/F0aVQSprLv4\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.ytimg.com\/vi\/F0aVQSprLv4\/0.jpg\" alt=\"YouTube video thumbnail\" width=\"480\" height=\"340\" \/><\/a><\/noscript><\/div><\/div><div class=\"lL\" style=\"max-width:100%;width:480px;margin:5px;\"> <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/F0aVQSprLv4\" target=\"_blank\">Watch this video on YouTube<\/a>.<\/div><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is a tradition rooted deeply in our culture and identity as Muslims and as Turks,&#8221; explains Hasan Demirci, one of the last remaining mahya masters in Istanbul. &#8220;The mahya displays messages of peace, spirituality and beauty. It transforms the mosque from just another building into a beacon radiating the divine words of Allah.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>An Art Form in Danger of Extinction<\/h3>\n<p>Sadly, this centuries-old art form requiring incredible skill and dedication is being threatened by modern times. Illuminated signs and bright city lights have made the softly glowing mahya panels less visible at night. Fewer young apprentices are stepping up to learn the painstaking process of creating the mahya designs on transparent paper using specialised inks and brushwork. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is very demanding work, taking weeks for a team to prepare the lengthy mahyas for hanging between minarets,&#8221; Demirci says. &#8220;My fear is that after my generation, there may be no one left with the expertise and passion to continue this tradition.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Tourists to Istanbul this spring and summer still have an opportunity to witness the magic of the mahya adorning the city&#8217;s grand mosques during holy nights and festivals. The municipality organises a competition each year to decorate select mosques with the calligraphic panels, keeping the tradition alive for at least a bit longer.
