Wandsworth in South London and Haringey in North London will host the London Borough of Culture in 2025 and 2027 consecutively. The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan through his official X (formerly Twitter) page, made this announcement on Monday, 11th March 2024. <\/p>\n

The mayor also announced the southwest London borough would receive \u00a31.35 million to help it prepare in the preparations for a year of artistic endeavour in 2025. Khan added that the award has become \u201ca\u202fcornerstone in the capital\u2019s calendar\u201d, saying, \u201cWe\u2019ve seen the difference that it\u2019s made in winning boroughs Waltham Forest, Brent, Lewisham and Croydon, and I\u2019m excited to see Wandsworth and Haringey\u2019s fantastic ideas come to life as we build a better London for all.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wandsworth council leader Simon Hogg said the area, which includes Battersea, Tooting and Balham, represented \u201cthe best of modern Britain\u201d. He said, \u201cAs a result of the Mayor\u2019s funding, we\u2019re going to deliver a year to remember \u2013 using the power of culture to transform lives, connect people and improve wellbeing, never more important than now.\u201d<\/p>\n

Haringey\u2019s plans include a celebration of the area\u2019s working-class history and will include a free family festival and a fashion and design show. Council leader Peray Ahmet said their bid focused on the area\u2019s \u201cheritage as a rebel borough\u201d and thanked Spurs, whose stadium is in the borough, for their \u201cimmense support\u201d. She said, \u201cWe look forward to welcoming London and the world to Haringey and delivering a year of culture which resonates with all of our diverse communities.\u201d<\/p>\n

They follow previous winners including Waltham Forest, Lewisham and Croydon in hosting the year-long events. According to Yahoo.uk,<\/em> three other boroughs, Barnet, Merton and Greenwich were named the Mayor\u2019s Cultural Impact Award winners and will receive up to \u00a3200,000 to deliver smaller projects.<\/p>\n

The London Borough of Culture supports local-led cultural and creative programmes, empowering communities and enhancing residents’ health and well-being.<\/p>\n
