Apple’s Vision Pro VR Technology Steals The Show<\/span><\/p>\n

On Monday 5th June 2023, apple hosted the much anticipated 2023 edition of the Worldwide Developers Conference at Apple Park, the company’s headquarters, in Cupertino, California. <\/p>\n

Apple as they always do, stole the show with their new Virtua Reality technology called the Apple Vision Pro. Launched by Apple CEO Tim Cook, the device is Apple’s first hardware launch in over a decade. <\/p>\n

The device, which looks more like ski googles than your average VR hardware, was described as an augmented reality headset.\u201cIt\u2019s the first Apple product you look through, and not at,\u201d CEO Tim Cook said of the device.<\/p>\n

Augmented reality is the technology that superimposes computer-generated images onto a user’s real-world view hence producing a composite view. Virtual reality, on the other hand, is a computer-generated simulation of a three-dimensional image or environment that can be interacted with.<\/p>\n

A dial on the Vision Pro allows users to alternate between full virtual reality and augmented reality. According to Cook, the device will \u201cseamlessly blend the real world with the digital world.\u201d<\/p>\n

You can explore rows of app icons using its operating system called visionOS which is controller-free. You can use voice commands in addition to tapping to choose and flicking to scroll. <\/p>\n

Apple claims that “hundreds of thousands of well-known iPhone and iPad apps” will function in that manner automatically. The device is primed to be available in the US in early 2024 with rollouts in other countries coming gradually over the course of the year.<\/p>\n

Apple also disclosed that the device will cost a whopping $3,499 and comes with a separate battery package that has 2 hours of battery life. <\/p>\n

At the event, Apple also announced its latest iPhone operating system, iOS 17, which will be available in Autumn 2023 as well as updates to MacBook Air. However, a notable absentee was Artificial Intelligence, which Apple snubbed altogether.<\/p>\n

Apple’s AI Snub<\/h3>\n

In its entire WWDC address on Monday, Apple made no mention of artificial intelligence. This despite having plenty of opportunities to do so.<\/p>\n

Yes, this did have an effect as Apple’s share price fell for a while during the event. Since the launch of ChatGPT, it’s all been AI since then with companies like Google jumping on the bandwagon without hesitation. <\/p>\n

However, for Apple, they decided to deliberately not mention AI in their presentation. In the Vision Pro presentation, they said it “uses an advanced encoder-decoder neural network.”<\/p>\n

As Mashable reports, “A neural network is a form of AI that attempts to copy the information-crunching style of the human brain!” So is Apple staying away from AI?<\/p>\n

A look into Apple’s operations will tell you that their delay on AI is simply them biding time for the technology to mature. Back in February, Apple CEO Tim Cook speaking to investors said that AI was going to be a “major focus” for the Tech giant. <\/p>\n

So while it is possible that they might be working on AI secretively in the background, it is also likely that they have decided to go the route of AR\/VR Technology.<\/p>\n

If Apple does go down the path of generative AI, that is computer systems that can generate text, images, and sounds, it\u2019s more likely the company will do so in the realm of visual and audio content. <\/p>\n

Perhaps by offering AI systems modeled off a customer\u2019s own content hence blending AI with the VR\/AR technology they have opted for.<\/p>\n
