What to Expect When Attending a Papal Audience in Rome: A Spiritual Journey<\/h1>\n

The Pope is one of the most popular figures in the world and a representation of a whole arm of religion. He also is one of the most difficult to see in person and catching a glimpse of the Pope could easily be the highlight of anyone\u2019s trip to Rome. If you\u2019re making plans to go to Vatican City and see the Pope, you\u2019ll have to check his availability at your travel times and book a free ticket about two to three months ahead of time so as to get the best view of the Pope. His Schedule is available for Public display and you can use this and plan your trip around it.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Pope\u2019s official residence since time immemorial has been the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican City. This is a popular tourist destination and is nestled in the heart of Rome. The Pope gets millions of visitors who travel far and wide to pay pilgrimage to him, both Catholics and non-Catholics alike. <\/span><\/p>\n

While you will need a ticket for special Papal masses and audiences, those tickets are also free. Guests should expect large crowds on popular days. If you\u2019re going to visit the Vatican to see the Pope, you might also want to spend some time in the area seeing notable historic sites such as St. Peter\u2019s Basilica and the Vatican Museums. <\/span><\/p>\n

Every Wednesday, there\u2019s a papal audience held in St Peter\u2019s Square or the Vatican\u2019s Nervi Auditorium. Tickets are officially free but are only available by faxing the Vatican offices. With the high volume of faxes they receive, you might wait sometime before getting a response.<\/span><\/p>\n

All instructions on how to go about this are listed on the Vatican City official website. Alternatively, you can pay a few euros to get a ticket where someone has already done the faxing for you and get a guided tour of St Peter\u2019s Basilica in addition on Wednesdays only.<\/span><\/p>\n

His Holiness the Pope addresses the audience from in front of a vast, grotesque sculpture on the stage called The Resurrection. Papal Audiences start at 10-10:30 am and last for between 60-90 minutes on average. Arrive at least 2 hours early in order to get a good seat.<\/span><\/p>\n

Unlike the Wednesday Papal Audience, you do not need a ticket to see the Pope on Sunday at noon. The Pope will appear from the window of an apartment at St. Peter\u2019s Square. During this short 20-minute experience, he will provide a short speech followed by the Angelus and an Apostolic Blessing. To get the best view of the Pope, be sure to arrive early. <\/span><\/p>\n

While the Papal Audience is not a mass, it does include some religious elements. The pope gives an address in Italian, including prayers and a time of singing. Most times, the Pope will meet the audience gathered and bless their artefacts including rosaries, Bibles or any other religious objects. <\/span><\/p>\n

Another option to explore to see the Pope is to visit Rome during a Holiday Mass. These are masses that are held to mark a particular holiday in the catholic calendar. This option is quite popular and might prove harder to get a ticket. If you intend to use this option, you\u2019ll need to make a ticket booking way in advance, possibly even months prior to the day.   <\/span><\/p>\n

Even if you have the chance to see the Pope, you shouldn\u2019t expect to get too close to him. Another thing to keep in mind is that you shouldn\u2019t attempt to reach out to him. If the Pope wants to shake hands he will, but it isn\u2019t recommended to be pushy or arrive with any expectation other than the possibility of seeing the Pope.<\/span><\/p>\n
