Elon Musk Announces That Twitter Will \u2018Purge\u2019 Inactive Accounts Freeing Up Usernames<\/h2>\n

As per an Elon Musk tweet, his way of making official announcements regarding the social platform, Twitter will be removing inactive accounts from the platform. The platform will be \u2018purging\u2019 accounts that have been inactive for several years.<\/p>\n

Elon Musk also provided a disclaimer warning that Twitter users, more so those who accrued followers in the early days of the platform\u2019s development would most likely lose followers.<\/p>\n

The tweet by Elon read, \u201cWe\u2019re purging accounts that have had no activity at all for several years, so you will probably see a follower count drop.\u201d<\/p>\n

For years, Twitter has alluded to and promised to remove inactive from the platform. This has been supported by a policy that the social media giant has in place. The policy advises that users should log in at least every 30 days to keep accounts from being permanently removed.<\/p>\n

However, unlike the policy which puts accounts that have been inactive for about a month in Jeopardy, the \u201cpurge\u201d will remove only those that have had \u201cno activity at all for several years.\u201d<\/p>\n

A direct consequence of this purge is the availability of usernames used by the soon-to-be-closed accounts. In a follow-up tweet after a user asked if the usernames would be available, Elon Musk tweeted, \u201cYes,\u201d a lot of usernames were about to become available as a result of this move.<\/p>\n

However, he did not mention how probable suitors of said usernames could acquire them. That is other than the usual method of creating a new account with the desired username.<\/p>\n

 As TechCrunch reports, Twitter has in recent months considered auctioning and selling these usernames as the company exploits various methods to generate revenue for the platform. However, it s clear as of yet how this scenario would play out or if the plan is still in motion or not.<\/p>\n

Musk has long been interested in freeing up usernames on the platform. As Twitter’s new owner (in October), he posted that he was eager to do so.<\/p>\n

Later, in December 2022, he doubled down on his claim when he tweeted that Twitter would \u201csoon\u201d start freeing the namespace of 1.5 billion accounts. He also noted that inactive accounts would be deleted as part of that process.<\/p>\n

Another question posited to Elon regarding the \u201cpurge\u201d is on the fate of accounts belonging to users who have passed on. Many are asking if there is a way to memorialize the accounts rather than deleting them. This is yet to be addressed.<\/p>\n

Twitter User John Carmack remarked that he did not appreciate the excitement around freeing up old usernames and identified the issue with the purge. According to John, deleting accounts would also delete their tweets when they were active which people revisit to date.<\/p>\n

John went ahead and compared Twitter to ancient libraries. He said, \u201c\u2026 while the burning of the library of Alexandria was a tragedy, scrolls, and books that were tossed in the trash just because nobody wanted to keep them are kind of worse. Save it all!\u201d<\/p>\n

Many users including John, have suggested that instead of a total \u2018purge\u2019 which will permanently delete these accounts, Twitter should rename them and probably include their year of creation.<\/p>\n

In a response to John Carmack\u2019s tweet, the platform\u2019s CEO said that \u201cThe accounts will be archived.\u201d He went on to reiterate that \u201cit is important to free up abandoned handles.\u201d<\/p>\n
