Russia Accuses Ukraine Of Carrying Out A Drone Strike On The Kremlin Aiming To Kill Putin<\/h2>\n

On Wednesday, May 3, 2023, Russia accused Ukraine of carrying out a drone attack on the Kremlin overnight. Russia also claims that Ukraine\u2019s aim in the alleged attack was to kill President Vladimir Putin.<\/p>\n

These allegations were made on Wednesday by the Kremlin and several Russian news agencies have since reported on the matter further spreading these allegations. According to Russian officials, there was no material damage to the Kremlin and Putin was not injured whatsoever.<\/p>\n

While making the announcement, the Kremlin\u2019s press service said, \u201cTwo unmanned aerial vehicles were aimed at the Kremlin. As a result of timely actions taken by the military and special services with the use of radar warfare systems, the vehicles were put out of action.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dmitry Peskov, Putin\u2019s spokesperson, disclosed that Putin was not in the Kremlin at the time of the alleged strike. He went on to add that Putin would spend the day, Wednesday, at the Novo-Ogoryovo state residence which is outside Moscow.<\/p>\n

Is There Evidence Of Said Attack<\/h2>\n

Russian\u2019s invasion of Ukraine began on 24th February 2022. Lasting over 14 months, the armed assault between the two nations has led to tens of thousands of casualties on each side.<\/p>\n

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) reports that a total of 8,709 civilians have died during Russia’s invasion of Ukraine as of May 1, 2023. What\u2019s more, over 14,666 people were reported to have been injured during the war so far.<\/p>\n

As far as evidence for the alleged attack, the only evidence so far is a slew of unverified videos circulating on social media. In one of the videos, there appeared to be smoke coming out of the Kremlin overnight while a second video from another angle showed fire on one of the buildings on the roof of the Kremlin.<\/p>\n

There also is footage with a flight path for the drone which as Dominic Waghorn said on Sky News, \u201cis spectacular.\u201d The drone flew over St Basil’s distinctive onion-domed cathedral, then across the breadth of Red Square, over Lenin’s mausoleum and the walls of the Kremlin, and finally crashing in flames into one of its roofs.<\/p>\n

Dominic goes on to claim that while there was an attack on the Kremlin, it most likely was not an attempt on Putin. He claims, \u201cWhat it probably wasn’t was an assassination attempt as claimed by the Russian government unless Vladimir Putin has a penthouse on the roof of the Kremlin.\u201d<\/p>\n

Probable Consequences?<\/h2>\n

In the announcement by the Kremlin, it was immediately clear that they will not take this \u201cattack\u201d lying down. The Kremlin said, \u201cThe Russian side reserves the right to take retaliatory measures where and when it sees fit.\u201d This statement alludes to a probable escalation in the already tense situation between the two nations.<\/p>\n

Other than a probable escalation of the war, the attack might have an influence on the 9th May Victory Day commemorations. On 9th May, Russia holds celebrations for Russia\u2019s great victory over Nazi Germany. The attack will more than likely tamp down the celebrations which were already limited as a result of the ongoing war.<\/p>\n

Another possible consequence of the \u201cattack\u201d is a retaliation by Russia where they go after Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskiy. This is a consequence fueled by the comments of former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev.<\/p>\n

According to Medvedev, the alleged attack leaves Moscow with no option but to \u201celiminate\u201d the Ukrainian president and his \u201cclique\u201d in Kyiv according to the Guardian.<\/p>\n

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy (Ukraine), has since denied that Kyiv was in any way behind the incident at the Kremlin.<\/p>\n
