Russian Company Sberbank Launches GigaChat, an AI Model Intended To Rival The Best Of Them<\/h2>\n

Sberbank is a state-owned banking and financial services company in Russia. On Monday, 24th April 2023, the company announced that they are joining the AI race with a chatbot of their own known as GigaChat.<\/p>\n

Since ChatGPT took the world by storm after its launch in late November 2022, there has been a flurry of entries into the booming AI sector. Gigachat is the latest in a long line that includes Google\u2019s Bard and Alibaba\u2019s Tongyi Qianwen. As per reports, there are more on the way including Elon Musk\u2019s much anticipated and publicized X.AI.<\/p>\n

Gigachat is currently not available to the public but can be accessed through an invite-only testing mode. According to the Russian lending company, Gigachat is different from the other AI models in that it can converse more intelligently in Russian.<\/p>\n

Much like the already available AI models, Gigachat can respond to users\u2019 questions, carry out a conversation, write a program code to develop software, and also create texts and images based on descriptions by the user.<\/p>\n

Following Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine, Western countries have cut their exports to the country as a protest of the actions. Severe sanctions have also been imposed on said exports which include technology. To this end, many companies in the country have made strategic investments in an effort to reduce or at least mitigate the country\u2019s reliance on Western exports.<\/p>\n

These investments include the tech industry where Sberbank has invested heavily and GigaChat is a \u201cfruit\u201d of these sound investments. The AI model is a product of Sberbank\u2019s SberDevices. SberDevices is a smart device manufacturer that was founded as a subsidiary of Sberbank in 2019.<\/p>\n

During the development of Gigachat, Sber\u2019s AI teams worked closely with Moscow\u2019s Artificial Intelligence Research Institute. I guess being state-owned has its perks after all huh?<\/p>\n
