Manchester United’s Europa League campaign ended in humiliation Friday night, thanks to a slew of self-inflicted wounds.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

However, this quarter-final was lost at Old Trafford in the first leg, when United led 2-0 and had chances to seal the tie, but surrendered two late own goals to lose the initiative. Erik ten Hag also lost his first-choice central defense partnership with Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane that night, a setback that would have a significant impact on this meek European departure.<\/p>\n

Harry Maguire has had a forgettable season, with the United captain losing his starting spot at the start of the season after Ten Hag realized he couldn’t trust the 30-year-old. However, things got much worse for Maguire, whose early gaffe allowed Sevilla the opening goal and set the tone for a defeat that demonstrated how far United still have to go.<\/p>\n

United badly missed the influence of suspended playmaker Bruno Fernandes, but his enforced absence alone could not explain such a shambolic display from a team supposedly on the up.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s just been such a bad evening for Manchester United,\u201d lamented Robbie Savage on commentary for BT Sport during the second half. \u201cShambles is the word.\u201d He wasn\u2019t wrong.<\/p>\n

Sevilla’s Ivan Rakitic had warned United they would not know what had hit them with the fervent and hostile atmosphere inside the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium – and so it proved.<\/p>\n

The noise inside the arena reached a crescendo in the eighth minute when Sevilla took the lead courtesy of a howler from David De Gea and, in particular, the hapless Maguire.<\/p>\n

Maguire called for the ball, despite having three Sevilla players bearing down on him. De Gea should have gone long, but instead passed the ball to his captain, with disastrous consequences.<\/p>\n

Without looking, Maguire tried to play a first-time pass to Aaron Wan-Bissaka, but the Sevilla trio read the situation, Erik Lamela winning the ball, with Youssef En-Nesyri slotting it past De Gea.<\/p>\n

Maguire scored an own goal late on in the first leg, to allow Sevilla to draw level, although on that occasion he was an unwitting victim. This time, however, he was wholly culpable for the goal.<\/p>\n

Maguire was an accident waiting to happen after that, uneasy and uncertain every time the ball came his way, with Sevilla fans exploiting his fragility by goading him whenever he was in control.<\/p>\n

United lacked fluency and understanding among their players, with Ten Hag’s team squandering possession and presenting no attacking threat. The only chances they had in an indifferent 45 minutes were a weak shot from Wan-Bissaka that was struck straight at Sevilla keeper Bono and a header from Casemiro that went over the bar.<\/p>\n

Sevilla scored again five minutes before the interval, this time through Lucas Ocampos, but the goal was ruled out for offside after a VAR review.<\/p>\n

United came in only a goal down at halftime, but a change was needed, and it came in the shape of Shaw and Rashford for Wan-Bissaka and Jadon Sancho.<\/p>\n

Nonetheless, United fell behind 2-0 just two minutes after the restart, with Ivan Rakitic’s corner met by Loic Bade, the ball bouncing off his shoulder and in off the underside of the bar.<\/p>\n

United had no chance after that, with De Gea making another terrible error late on, controlling the ball beyond his area and allowing En-Nesyri to steer it into the empty net for 3-0.<\/p>\n

If there is one saving grace for United, it is that they are still on track to qualify for the Champions League by finishing in the top four in the Premier League.<\/p>\n

This defeat, though, served as a clear reminder that, despite significant progress this season, they remain a work in progress under Ten Hag.<\/p>\n
