FBI Arrests Two People Over Allegedly Running Secret Chinese Police Stations In New York<\/h2>\n

The Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) arrested two alleged operatives in Manhattan on Monday for running a clandestine Chinese \u201cpolice station\u201d. The arrested individuals are Lu Jianwang, 61, and Chen Jinping, 59, both New York City residents.<\/p>\n

They are due for a court date on Monday in a federal court in Brooklyn where they will face charges of conspiring to act as agents of China and obstruction of justice. The said police station was located above a noodle restaurant in Manhattan\u2019s Chinatown.<\/p>\n

After the closure of this \u2018first\u2019 station, the New York Post reports that there is another similar station at an undisclosed location in New York City and in other five (5) cities including Los Angeles, San Francisco, Houston, Nebraska, Texas, and Minnesota. Bringing the tally to seven alleged Chinese police stations in the country so far.<\/p>\n

As Fox News reports, China has indeed opened dozens of “overseas police service stations” around the world which are operated by the Chinese Communist Party. As per claims, these stations are used to help Chinese nationals living abroad. They enable them to obtain and access services such as renewing driver\u2019s licenses.<\/p>\n

However, Safeguard Defenders, a human rights group, disputes these claims. The group instead suggests that the Chinese instead use the centers to improve their ability to enforce their laws on international grounds which is a violation of international law.<\/p>\n

The Safeguard Defenders also posit that these police stations hide behind non-profits and community associations. For example, the station discovered in Manhattan\u2019s Chinatown was run by the America ChangLe Association NY Inc. The charitable organization owns the building at 107 East Broadway where the operation was located.<\/p>\n

As per reports, the non-profit organization paid $1.3 million in 2016 for the suite of offices that houses the \u2018police station.\u2019 The New York Post also discloses that the group hosted New York City Mayor Eric Adams as their guest of honor at their annual gala dinner. Allegedly, the event was never listed on the mayor\u2019s official agenda.<\/p>\n

Breon Pearce, the prosecutor in the case against the two operatives said, “This prosecution reveals the Chinese government’s flagrant violation of our nation’s sovereignty by establishing a secret police station in the middle of New York City.”<\/p>\n

On the matter, assistant attorney general Matthew Olsen, from the Justice Department’s National Security Division said, “The PRC’s [People’s Republic of China] actions go far beyond the bounds of acceptable nation-state conduct. We will resolutely defend the freedoms of all those living in our country from the threat of authoritarian repression.”<\/p>\n

If convicted, the operatives, both Mr. Lu and Mr. Chen face up to 25 years in prison. China and Chinese embassies have reiterated that these locations are “overseas service stations\u201d that were opened during the pandemic to assist Chinese nationals living in abroad countries with driver’s license renewal and similar matters.<\/p>\n
