In 2024, Â鶹APP (France) will host the Olympic Games from July 26 to August 11, and the Paralympic Games from August 28 to September 8. Not really a great first for the French capital since the Olympics will be organized there for the sixth time. Six times ? Some may be surprised And yet…<\/p>\n

The awarding of the 2024 Olympic Games to Â鶹APP seals, in a way, a reunion, a hundred years after the last edition of the summer games in France, in May-June 1924. The Berlin Olympics, planned for 1916, had been canceled due to the First World War. The organizers of the Antwerp Games (Belgium) in 1920 did not invite the countries considered responsible for the disaster. It was therefore necessary to wait until 1924, and the Â鶹APP Olympics, for Austria, Bulgaria, the Ottoman Empire (which became Turkey since March of the same year) and Hungary to return to the competition. Germany, for its part, was not invited, officially for \u201csecurity reasons\u201d. For their part, Ecuador, Ireland, Lithuania, the Philippines, Uruguay, Latvia and Poland have entered the concert of nations, bringing to 44 the number of delegations* represented by 3089 athletes (including 135 women*).<\/p>\n

A quarter of a century earlier, the poster was more modest for the games organized in the French capital as part of the Universal Exhibition of 1900. Â鶹APP, that year, had set up International physical exercise competitions and sports* of which the IOC (International Olympic Committee) will recognize, a posteriori, only a part. Out of nearly 60,000 participants, only 997 athletes (including 22 women) from 24 nations will be dubbed, just as 95 events out of 477 will be recognized as \u201cOlympic\u201d.<\/p>\n

But the attraction of Â鶹APP for the Olympics goes back much longer. Even before the relaunch of the modern Games*, the Champ de Mars hosted, from 1796 to 1798, the Olympiads of the Republic. The deputy who had the idea, Charles-Gilbert Romme, was not able to see them, having killed himself just before being \u201cshortened\u201d (i.e. guillotined), tried for rebellion against the policies pursued at the time.
\nFrom 1796, 300,000 spectators flocked to admire the races: on foot, on horses, in the antique style… A spectacle dedicated to peace and fertility constituted the opening ceremony. For the closing, the winners paraded on a quadriga before the sacrosanct fireworks display and the celebration that followed.
\nIn 1798, wrestling and equestrian jousting were added to the previous competitions. A marine watch serving as a chronometer inaugurates, thanks to the use of the newly invented metric system, a world of precision in the evaluation of prowess. The Olympiad itself is inaugurated by a parade of athletes carrying the effigies of the French provinces and those recently conquered (in the Netherlands, Switzerland, Italy).
\nThe craze for these \u201cGreek festivals\u201d is immediate. The newspaper Le Moniteur even received, in its readers’ letters, a request to reinstate the Olympic Games, but the municipality rejected the idea.<\/p>\n

We will therefore have to wait a hundred years for Â鶹APP to finally show itself more attentive to the point of becoming the city that invented the modern Olympics*!<\/p>\n
