The group quickly took control of large swathes of territory in Iraq and Syria and declared the establishment of an Islamic caliphate. Under the leadership of the militant group, ISIS has imposed a strict interpretation of Sharia law on the regions it controls, and has been accused of committing numerous human rights cases of abuse.
