As part of the global World Car Free Day initiative, Londoners are being urged to leave their cars at home for World Car Free Day. The worldwide celebration is set for September 22nd, it will be marked in London over the weekend of Friday 20 and Sunday 22. The event aims to highlight the benefits of reduced traffic, improved air quality, and creating more people-friendly space.
Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan is calling on London neighborhoods to join in by having car-free streets. While it is not compulsory to go car free, neighborhoods interested in participating can sign up. The mayor, in collaboration with Play Streets, is providing free space hoppers to neighborhoods taking part in the initiative.
But it’s not just about ditching your car. Neighborhoods are being encouraged to host exciting events and activities to make the most of car-free streets. It’s a chance for communities to come together, bond, and rediscover the joy of people-powered travel.
‘We are delighted to once again be supporting the activation of play streets on Car Free Day, a unique opportunity to transform streets into playful and social spaces, where all members of the community can come together to scoot, bike, walk, space hop and socialize safely, ’ stated Will Norman, the Mayor’s Walking and Cycling Commissioner.
