Travelers seeking to explore the Czech Republic鈥檚 hiking trails, now have the opportunity to visit hidden routes via the web or the Epu app. The project initiated by the country鈥檚 Environment Ministry in partnership with software firms Gatyer and Algodos, launched the portal in mid-April 2024. The aim is to inform visitors of lesser-known routes to combat overtourism in Czech and Prague.

Users of this free app can expect adventures on less-crowded routes. They will also be informed on the correct ways to explore nature in Czechia. Such as warning tourists to keep off unmarked trails that could damage paths. Tourists will also be alerted on trail closures due to emergencies and the events taking place around the area.

Moreover, via the English-friendly web version of the Epu app, visitors will access more details like the length of suggested routes. Also, the altitude, how dog, stroller, or cycle-friendly the routes are, and whether the area is crowded.

In a press release, Gayter director Ladislav Cirhan explained the app seeks to “dilute people, attract them to places that are not so populated and at the same time just as interesting.”

Besides recommending lesser-known trips, Epu will also reveal routes to the edges of protected areas to reduce the strain on the most popular spots. This means that the app does not feature locations with existing high interest from tourists today.

“The locations will not be in the most exposed places. This means that in the Krkono拧e, they (routes) will not lead to Sn臎啪ka, and in Bohemian Switzerland, they will not go past the Prav膷ick谩 br谩na, ” explained Cirhan.

Additionally, fun awaits users, “Along the way, it provides visitors with information about places they might otherwise miss, and also offers games, whether in the form of quizzes or the virtual ‘collecting’ of protected species,” added Cirhan.

To ensure the accuracy and relevancy of suggested routes, various agencies like the National Parks and protected landscape sectors will offer the Czech Environment Ministry their support.
