Michael Mann’s latest endeavor, Ferrari, is a wonderful homage to the late racing and car industry giant. Through his deft handling of what was an extraordinarily messy (or should I say dysfunctional?) private life, Mann delivers a compelling biographical sports drama focused on the man, not the car or the racing. For those going in expecting a car racing film a la Ford vs. Ferrari or Grand Prix, you will not be disappointed as you will be rewarded with some incredible race and or crash scenes.

To the naysayers who said the CGI was horrible, remember it was a scant few seconds here and there and how could anyone have actually staged those scenes without killing someone so go sit down and get a life. Some have said that Adam Driver was not ‘handsome enough’ to portray Enzo, but au contraire, just Google some photos, and you will see that Driver was a perfect choice. His portrayal is at once charming, vengeful, narcissistic, ruthless, kind, caring, self-centered, cold and calculating. 5 stars.

Penelope Cruz shines in her also 5-star unglamorous characterization of long-suffering but brilliantly shrewd Laura Ferrari, co-founder of the illustrious dynasty we have grown to love. Let’s not overlook Shailene Woodley as Lina, Enzo’s mistress and mother of his son or Dr. McDreamy (better known as Patrick Dempsey of Grey’s Anatomy fame) as race car driver Piero Taruffi; both delivered without becoming an afterthought or caricature. See it on the big screen or streaming, it is well worth your time.
